Supercross 2001: Same old story?

Wed, May 23 2001 12:00 am | Comments Every time the opening round of Supercross hits Anaheim, the predictions flow like Niagara Falls. How many times have you heard from “your wife’s second-brother’s half-cousin” that Kevin Windham was cutting faster lap times than Jeremy McGrath at his buddy’s practice track? Or how about the one where Jeremy’s teammate smoked him in some European race so badly that McGrath actually considered an early retirement?

So will this year be any different? Well, if you think about it, all indications point toward 2K1 being the year that a new winner is crowned in the 16-round EA Sports Supercross Series. Ricky Carmichael is coming off of a winning 250cc outdoor season and is in incredible shape, David Vuillemin has a year of U.S. Supercross under his belt, two new 125 SX champs have stepped up to the plate to contest the premier class, and, well, the list goes on and on.

[IMAGE 2]There are nearly a dozen riders who have a legitimate shot at stealing MC’s thunder, but when you boil it all down, the champ is still ready and willing to take on all comers and the rumors that they bring with them. Sure, anything can happen, but if the first couple of races are any indication of what is to come, it’s going to be a long year for both the title challengers as well as the devil’s advocates.
