Daytona SX: First Qualifying Practice

Photos by Brendan Lutes

Daytona is finally here. After the long stretch of baseball and football stadiums, it is nice to come outside and take a nice deep breath of fresh air. This year, the Daytona Supercross presented by Honda has been designed by the GOAT himself, Ricky Carmichael. As might be expected from the 15 time national champ, he threw in a few tricky sections to throw off the riders’ rhythm. The mixture of top soil, sand, and clay has already begun to develop into one rough circuit, although Mark Barnett’s crew has been and will continue to do maintenance throughout the day. So far in Lites practice, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Dean Wilson has the top time, followed by Austin Stroupe and Christophe Pourcel. In the Supercross Class, Chad Reed is making his return to racing with a bang, as he so far has the fastest time in the class followed by his teammate, Ryan Villopoto, then last week’s winner and current points leader Ryan Dungey. Stay tuned throughout the day for more updates on Daytona throughout the day.
