Although the St. Louis Supercross didn’t have the more typical climactic Lites champion-crowning moment, it did develop into quite an eventful race. For the Lites class, St. Louis provided one last chance for the rookies to shine. Justin Barcia, Blake Baggett, and Dean Wilson all tasted the sweet flavor of the podium in their freshman Supercross season, and they all wanted to grab a win before heading to Las Vegas. We talked to them about their impressions of their rookie seasons in Supercross; check it out…
As for the Supercross class, the points chase between Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey came to a head in the main event. Anyone who saw the race can testify as to how fast the Ryans were pounding out the initial laps of the main event. Villopoto chased Dungey like he’d stolen his wallet, and about eight laps in, RV2 and Dungey came together in a bowl turn. Both hit the dirt and, in dramatic fashion, remounted their bikes simultaneously side by side. Villopoto, however, got a bit better jump and took over the first position. His lead did not last. While attempting to triple into a turn from the right side of the track, RV came up well short, and had to eject. He smacked the floor, his bike cartwheeling after him. The line that most used to triple was on the left side of the track, but RV took the right-side line which had a deeper rut and a very slick approach. His bike couldn’t carry the same trajectory or speed through that line, and he had to pull the eject cord.
His tibia and fibula both broke, and he was scheduled for surgery that same night. His season, his championship hopes, and likely his outdoor season, are finished. As it stands, Dungey should walk away with the title in his rookie 450 season.
