After nearly 18 years, the USGP made the return back to Glen Helen in San Bernardino, California.  The winds were blowing hard, but that didn’t stop Doug Dubach, Marvin Musquin, and Mike Alessi from dominating their classes.

MX1 Qualifying

At the start of the MX1 qualifier, Maximillian Nagl blasted out front on his Red Bull KTM, while Mike Alessi came in quick on his rear tire into the Talladega. After the first lap was completed, Alessi made his move on Nagl, as did David Philippaerts, and Ben Townley. At the beginning of the third lap, things were heating up for Philippaerts as Townley was desperately searching for lines to get around him. Coming into the Talladega, however, Townley dove on the inside, and took control of second. By the time Townley moved into second, Alessi had opened his gap to about seven seconds. Townley closed that gap to about six seconds at one point, but he couldn’t cut the time gap anymore than that. By the fifth lap, Philippaerts had completely dropped out of the top ten, and Nagl, along with Cairoli, moved into the third and fourth spots. At the end of the ten laps, Alessi had an eight second on Townley, while Nagl took the third position.
