It was hot in Southern Maryland this weekend, and so was the action. The fourth round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships delivered some excellent racing and saw some changes in the championship points standings. Here is what went down at the famous facility.
450 Class
Moto 1
With the 450 class riders blasting off the line, Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short pulled a fantastic start, followed by Jagermeister/KTM’s Mike Alessi, and Geico Powersport/Honda’s Brett Metcalfe. With a clear in front of him, Shorty was able to lay down some very fast laps and open up a comfortable lead on Alessi. Ryan Dungey was able to make some moves early on in the moto aboard his Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki and take over third place, and he quickly went to work on Alessi. But his charge would stop there, as Alessi was able to hold of the red number five points leader. Early on Dungey lost his goggles and was forced to take different lines to avoid Alessi’s roost, but was never able to make the pass. Chad Reed had a decent start but was also unable to make much of a dent in the pack, gaining only one position throughout the race. At the finish though it was Short taking his first moto win since Freestone in 2007 as the number 29 led wire to wire.
Moto 2
In almost a mirror image of the first moto, Andrew Short grabbed the second moto holeshot with Ryan Dungey and Chad Reed not far behind. Noticeably not as strong as his first moto, Short began to drop off the pace early on, and Dungey inherited the lead with Reed in tow. At first it looked as though Reed was gaining on Dungey, but as the laps continued on, the gap grew. Further back, Brett Metcalfe was putting in a strong ride until Townley found a second moto win and pushed forward along with Josh Grant on his Muscle Milk/Toyota/JGR/Yamaha. At one point the number 33 got around Townley, but the New Zealander was able to regain his composure and retake his claim. At the finish, Dungey claimed the moto win and overall, followed by Reed and Townley.
