Washougal National – Race Report

The Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship descended onto the picturesque Washougal MX Park this weekend, and lucky for us, Saturday marked Washougal’s hottest day of the year thus far. Ryan Dungey continues to stack up the points, and he will likely wrap this championship up well before the final round at Pala. In the 250 class, Christophe Pourcel is also enjoying a sizeable points lead, but Trey Canard is tallying wins of his own, making this 250 championship chase an interesting one.

450 MOTO 1
In somewhat blazing temperatures (minus the humidity, thankfully) Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short grabbed the first holeshot of the day, with Kevin Windham, Brett Metcalfe, and Ryan Dungey making chase. Ben Townley may well have been in the mix, too, but the Troy Lee Honda rider wadded up on the first lap, hurting his shoulder, and could not continue racing. Two laps in, Dungey overtook Metcalfe for the third position, but Metty did not let him out of his sight. Josh Grant, meanwhile, found his way into the fourth spot behind Metty. It wasn’t long before Dungey seized his opportunity and made the pass on Short. From there, the Dunge started distancing himself, slowly creeping further from the Honda rider. Nearly simultaneously, Metcalfe overtook Windham for third. With about five minutes clicked off into the moto, three of the top four were Hondas.

As Dungey crept away from the rest of the field, Josh Grant, Tommy Hahn, and Ryan Sipes reeled in Windham, who was starting to show the signs of a summer on the lake. Before long, the three had gotten around the longtime vet, as well as Mike Alessi and Kyle Chisholm.
As the time ticked away, the top seven settled into their respective positions until the checked flag waved for Ryan Dungey. It marked the 11th moto win for the rookie, stacking more points onto his overall lead in the premiere class.

450 MOTO 2
With live coverage making sure to shoot holes in our race report, the gates dropped for the second 450 moto with yet another holeshot from Andrew Short, 2010′s new holeshot artist. Kevin Windham and Ryan Dungey chased after the factory Honda rider, while Mike Alessi and his brother Jeff discussed the problems with wrecking in the second turn. Mike was visibly upset at his brother as the two picked up their bikes after piling up right after the start.
Out front, Windham held off Dungey as long as he could, but the dominant rookie took over just a few laps in, and set his sights on Short. Hahn and Justin Brayton soon joined the fun and began reeling in Windham. The real eye opener came from Brett Metcalfe, who wrecked in the back section of the track, putting him back to 25th… He put the hammer down and rallied back to fifth before the checkers flew, salvaging third overall. It’s easy to overlook some of the other guys in the class with Dungey dominating the way he has, but Metty is killing it on the 450.
With that, Dungey greatly increased his points lead, and added a 12th moto victory to the books. Shorty and Metty, meanwhile, rounded out the overall podium.
