Monday Kickstart Presented by ONE Industries – Steel City
The penultimate round of the Outdoor Nationals delivered some of the best racing of the season. Even though the 450 title is already wrapped up, that has not dulled the competition in the class. With the 250 Class and WMX titles still on the line, the action was intense to say the least. As we head into the final round this weekend at the first ever Pala National, Christophe Pourcel leads Trey Canard by a mere seven points. Jessica Patterson has a slightly more comfortable cushion on Ashley Fiolek, but it would still only take one bad moto to turn the championships in either class around. For now, here is a behind the scenes look at Steel City.
MotoConcepts/Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes set the fastest lap time in practice, which is enough to put a smile on any rider’s face. Unfortunately Ryan was unable to transfer that speed into a solid finish as a crash in the second moto forced him to work his way back up through the pack. Still, his 6-19 scores were good enough for 13th overall.
Sebastien Tortelli was spotted hanging out in the pits, mainly in the Honda camp. The former World Champ recently returned from a celebrity race in Mexico with the likes of Stefan Everts, David Vuillemin, and Doug Dubach, among others.
As you have probably heard Tim Ferry has been working with Trey Canard since about the midway through the season and the results have obviously been paying off.
Europe seems to have a few more neck brace options than what is available so far in the U.S. This Ortema brace worn by Gareth Swanepoel is extremely lightweight. However, the unit is also far more flexible than the current offerings we are familiar with.
You better believe K-Dub was a happy camper after his win. The Red Bull Honda rider has not won an overall since 2007. K-Dub was the crowd favorite.
Darryn Durham has struggled somewhat this season but was able to come away with decent results at Steel City. The local rider had fans everywhere who were cheering him on all the way around the track.
The riders and fans keep getting more and more into the podium celebrations. There’s nothing like getting sprayed with champagne when you are already covered in dirt.
