Race Report – Monster Energy Supercross Series: Oakland

Round four of the Monster Energy Supercross series invaded Oakland-Alameda County Stadium, making a return to the venue after a 28-year absence, and a healthy crowd of Supercross fans braved the questionable weather to witness James Stewart and Broc Tickle take wins their respective classes.

SUPERCROSS LITES

When the gate dropped at the start of the 15-lap Supercross Lites main event, Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac grabbed the holeshot and led Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, and the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki duo of Josh Hansen and Broc Tickle through turn one. Tomac looked great as he led the first three laps, but the youngster slid out in a sweeping left-hander that had become slippery in the rain. Roczen took over at the point, but he too looked a bit sketchy in the wet conditions, allowing Hansen and Tickle to creep up on him and pressure for position.

Hansen and Roczen traded the lead a couple times before Hanny made it stick for good, and soon after, Tickle also made his way past. Roczen got sideways in a treacherous set of whoops and it seemed to derail him momentarily, allowing the lead duo to pull away. Tomac, meanwhile, had remounted in fourth and began to close the gap on the lead trio as the laps wore down.

Out front, Hansen looked solid, but as the laps wore down Tickle began to look more and more comfortable. Tickle found his way past at the two-thirds point, and would never be challenged en route to what would be his second career Supercross Lites win. Hansen held on to a solid second, while Tomac found his way back onto the podium when Roczen slid out in the same corner that had claimed the early race leader. Roczen held on for fourth, comfortably ahead of the final Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider, Tyla Rattray.
