Race Report – Monster Energy Supercross: Houston

SUPERCROSS

All hell broke loose at the start of the Supercross main event as a huge pileup claimed many riders, including James Stewart and Chad Reed. Geico Honda’s Kevin Windham took control of the lead and established an immediate cushion over the pack. The popular rider from Mississippi led the first half of the race with a commanding lead, but a miscue in the tricky rhythm second caused Windham to crash hard. K-Dub was struck by his bike and laid on the track for a few minutes, but eventually walked off under his own power.

When Windham went down, Canard took over at the point, and had a three-second lead over defending champion Ryan Dungey. Canard looked strong at the front, but Dungey caught fire in the closing laps and reeled the leader in. With three laps to go it looked like the champion would take it, as he worked past a bobbling Canard and into the lead. That would last only a straightaway though, as Canard raced back into the lead quickly aboard his Honda CRF450R. Dungey stayed close in spite of being balled up by a lapper on the last lap, and made an intense run at the finish line. Canard won by a bike-length, becoming the third winner of the 2011 season.

Third went to new series championship points leader Ryan Villopoto, who worked through the pack after a terrible start. RV passed Davi Millsaps and Brett Metcalfe in the final stages of the race to earn the final podium position. After retstarting near last, Stewart worked up to as high at ninth, but he crashed a second time in the same rhythm section as Windham when he made contact with the back of Jason Thomas’ Suzuki. Stewart circulated the track slowly after that, crossing the finish line in 15th. Reed, meanwhile, recovered well from the first-turn spill and came home sixth.
