Race Report – Monster Energy Supercross: Toronto

Wilson and Dungey Take the Win in Canada

By Jordan Powell

It was a crazy night of racing at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Round 12 of the Monster Energy Supercross series definitely did not disappoint, and Toronto proved to be another turning point in the championship standings battle.

In the Supercross Lites class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson put on a show for his former countrymen. Right behind him, Geico Honda’s Justin Barcia took a solid second. He was able to hold off the hard-charging Kawasaki rider for a few laps, but he eventually had to settle for second and keep his points lead. Barcia’s teammate Blake Wharton took the last spot on the podium.

For the Supercross class, Toronto, and the Monster Energy series, saw a new winner, Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey. Two Two Motorsport’s Chad Reed tried to reel in the 2010 Supercross Champion, but he wasn’t able to pull it off. However, Reed is now the new points leader by three points. Honda’s Trey Canard was in the mix for a bit, but when the checkers flew, he finished third.

SUPERCROSS LITES
With thousands of fans watching, Blake Wharton grabbed a huge holeshot with his teammate and Justin Barcia right on his rear wheel. Trying to fend off the frenzy behind him, Sipes moved into the number one spot, but not for long. Blake Wharton made the pass back on Sipes, and the Yamaha rider flew off the track. It took a while for the DNA rider to get his bike fired back up, and he remounted in almost last. Wharton was able to take control of the race for a little bit, but his teammate Justin Barcia took the lead. Moving up through the pack, Dean Wilson started to make the stadium erupt as he picked off riders one by one, and then he finally set his sights on Barcia. The two battled for a few laps, but the Scotland born, Canada raised, rider made the pass on the Honda rider as they exited the whoops.

From there, Wilson started to gap on Barcia, and Wharton silently stayed in third. All three riders would stay in those positions after the checkers flew. On the podium, Wharton replied to the pass on Sipes (who finished fifth), “I believe the pass in Houston between the two of us was a racing incident, and I believe what happened here was a racing incident, too.” Dean’s win bumped him into the number two spot in the series with 122 points. Barcia’s second place finished kept him 16 points ahead of Wilson.
