Race Report: Monster Energy Supercross – Salt Lake City

Villopoto and Tomac Storm Through Salt Lake City

Under ever changing weather conditions at the Rice-Eccles Stadium, Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto came out on top in their respective classes. For Tomac, the win in SLC drew the points battle that much closer coming into the final round in Las Vegas, and he now only trails Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle by three points. Villopoto’s win helped him gain a little bit of breathing room, and now second place rider Chad Reed is nine points back.

With frigid cold temperatures, Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac blasted out of the gate first, and he grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot award. Hot on his tire, though, was Pro Circuit teammates, Josh Hansen and Broc Tickle. Hansen tried to get around Tomac early on in the race, but he went down when he and Eli came together. That allowed Tickle to move up into second, with Ken Roczen chasing him down. Lap after lap, Roczen started to pull the Pro Circuit rider in until about the halfway point, Kenny made the pass. Meanwhile, Tomac continued to slowly pull away from the rest of the pack.

While Tickle sat in third, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely looked as if he was going to make the pass on Kawasaki rider, but that allowed Kyle Cunningham to move on in, and around, Seely. However, Cole was able to move past the DNA Shred Stix rider, and he eventually settled for fourth. At the end of the race, Tomac took his second career win in the AMA Supercross Lites class, while Roczen and Tickle finished second and third, respectively.
