The first day of racing for the Monster Energy Mammoth Mountain Motocross in Mammoth Lakes, California, is in the record books with the over-30 riders taking over the mountain to compete in Pirelli’s weekend of vet racing.

Jeremy McGrath battled hard with Ryan Hughes, but after Hughes suffered a flat rear tire in the second moto, MC cruised in for the 2-1 overall win in Vet Pro.

While there was plenty of racing action throughout the day, the class to watch was Vet 30-plus Pro, which saw Yamaha-mounted Ryan Hughes and Honda Racing’s Jeremy McGrath battle it out in both motos. Hughes took the first moto win after taking over the lead on the first lap. McGrath kept him honest, though, and remained within striking distance for the entire race, finishing only a few seconds behind Hughes when the checkered flag flew.
When the gate dropped for the second moto, McGrath took the holeshot. His lead, however, was short lived, as Hughes managed to get by the Honda rider in the back section. From there, Hughes opened up a sizeable lead, but McGrath was able to get close at times. With only a few laps left in the race, Hughes got a flat rear tire allowing McGrath to take over the lead and cruise in for the win. Behind the top-two, Timmy Weigand took third with Michael Sleeter taking fourth.
As for other racing today, Doug Dubach dominated the Senior Expert division, taking home both moto wins aboard his DRD Yamaha. In the 40-Plus Intermediates Mike Carter also walked away with both moto wins. In the Masters 50-Plus B Robert Werschey took both moto wins, while Jim Holley did the same in the Masters 50-Plus A class. In the 30-Plus Junior class, Kris Martin took the main event win, while Antoin Daily did the same in the Senior Junior main. In the 30-Plus Intermediate main, Brian Kuelper took home the win in a dominating performance. More racing is set to take place tomorrow, so don’t forget to check back for more coverage.
