Race Report – Southwick

250 Moto 1:
The start of the first 250 class moto saw DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Gareth Swanepoel take the holeshot followed closely by Geico Honda’s Jimmy Decotis and privateer Honda rider Lance Vincent. A few turns into the race, though, and Decotis went down hard allowing Vincent to take over second with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson moving into third. At the conclusion of the first lap, Rattray had closed in on Vincent for second while his teammate Dean Wilson had moved into fourth.
As the laps continued, Swanepoel held onto the lead, but his fellow South African Rattray had closed the gap and began to challenge for first. After following for a few laps, Rattray worked his way around Swanepoel down one of Southwick’s extremely rough straights. From there, Rattray began to put down very fast lap times, opening up a gap over Swanepoel. Behind the Yamaha rider, points leader Wilson started to close the gap on Swanepoel while DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Gannon Audette enjoyed his best ride of the season, not far behind in fourth.
With roughly 10 minutes left in the moto, Rattray came into a turn to hot, stalled his bike, and gave the lead away to Swanepoel. The mistake also allowed Wilson to close in on both riders, however, Rattray and Swanepoel proved to have too much speed for the Scottsman. With that, Swanepoel pulled away to take his first ever moto win followed by Rattray, Wilson, Audette, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle completing the top-five.

250 Moto 2:
The start of the final 250 Class moto saw privateer Honda rider Alex Martin take the holeshot ahead of Decotis, Rattray, and Wilson. By the end of the first lap, Martin had opened up a three and a half second lead over Rattray, but as the laps ticked off, Rattray began to chip away at the lead with Wilson close behind. Behind them, local favorite Decotis held down fourth with first moto winner Swanepoel in fifth, however, the South African went down in a turn and dropped back to fifth.
As the race continued, Rattray began to open up a sizeable lead over Martin while Wilson did his best to close the gap on the Honda rider. Halfway through the race, however, Wilson managed to work his way around Martin and take over second. After that, Martin remained in third until the finish with Wilson and Rattray holding down second and first respectively until the checkered flag flew. Behind Martin, rookie Geico Honda’s Justin Bogal finished fifth with first moto winner Swanepoel grabbing sixth. The overall saw Rattray take home his second consecutive Southwick victory ahead of points leader Wilson and Swanepoel.
