Temecula, CA. (January 11th, 2012) - MotoConcepts Racing kicked off the Anaheim opener of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, before a sold-out crowd of 45,050 fans at Angel Stadium.
Three MotoConcepts Racing riders – Mike Alessi, Jeff Alessi, and Vince Friese –lined up Saturday afternoon, January 7th, 2012 for qualifying with Mike settled and confident after an off-season of continuous testing and racing in several European Supercross events. Jeff didn’t have that luxury as he was injured right up until the week before Anaheim. And Vince, though being healthy, had recently switched bike brands and dropped down from the Supercross class to Lites class.
All three riders easily qualified for the night show, with Mike Alessi leading the group in 18th position, Vince Friese in 22nd place, and Jeff Alessi clocking in with solid 31st position, considering his recent injury. None of the riders were satisfied with their qualifying runs though and committed to stepping their performance up a couple of levels in the night show racing program, which they did.
Vince began the evening with an uncharacteristically bad start in his Heat race, coming around the first turn outside the top ten. He quickly went to work passing riders and qualified easily for the main event by placing 7th in his heat.
Next up was Mike Alessi in Supercross Heat 1. Mike pulled a perfect holeshot in front of Chad Reed, who he led for a few laps before relinquishing the point position to the popular Aussie. However, Mike continued to ride extremely well against a very deep field that included Ryan Villopoto, Davi Millsaps, Justin Brayton, Josh Hill, Broc Tickle, and Josh Hansen to finish 2nd in the heat, equaling his career best.
Jeff Alessi was in Heat 2 and struggled due to lack of seat time after coming back from a recent wrist injury. He placed 14th and went on to The Last Chance Qualifier, where he finished 16th, thus ending his night.
In the Supercross Lites main event, Vince Friese grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot, winning the $1,000 award in the process. After running several hard laps, Vince had problems that dropped him back to an eventual 15th place finish.
The night ended with the Supercross class Main Event. Mike Alessi gated well, rounding the first lap in 5th place. After battling with James Stewart for 5th position, Mike settled into 6th place for several laps, slowly gaining on Ivan Tedesco, who was then running in 5th place. Looking strong and confident, Mike attempted several passes on the wily veteran to no avail. Finally Mike forced a difficult pass on Tedesco and, unfortunately, crashed. Mike quickly remounted in 9th place and continued to ride very well, closing the gap between himself and the riders in front of him. In the end, he finished a strong 9th place.
