Race Report: Phoenix Supercross

Supercross Qualifying

Andrew Short grabbed the holeshot at the start of the first 10-lap Supercross heat, and led Mike Alessi, Josh Hansen and Chad Reed through turn one. James Stewart was mired at the start, but wasted little time slicing through the field. Reed took control of the lead briefly when he block passed Short, but Stewart struck one corner later, passing both Short and Reed and racing into the lead. Reed tried to retaliate in the same corner one lap later, but lost the front end and crashed out of contention. Stewart maintained easy control of the race from then on, even busting out a huge quad that no one had done all day long along the first base line. Short held on for second, well ahead of Alessi on his Motoconcepts 450. Hansen turned in a great ride for fourth, ahead of his H&H teammate Ivan Tedesco.

Supercross LCQ

Nick Wey claimed the holeshot in the LCQ and led the entire race en route to his first main event of the young series. Justin Sipes held control of second early on, but Jimmy Albertson and Josh Grant worked past and battled tooth-in-nail over the final transfer position. The two riders swapped the position a couple times, but when they made contact entering a corner, Grant was send into a spectacular over-the-bars crash and out of contention. Albertson took the final transfer spot.

Supercross Main

When the gate dropped at the start of the second Supercross main of the season, Dungey grabbed the holeshot aboard his KTM 450SX-F and led Weimer and Windham around the track. Villopoto crashed in the sand on lap one and remounted at the back of the pack, while Stewart struggled with a terrible start. LCQ transfers Wey and Albertson crashed hard together on the opening lap and never returned to the race.

Dungey began to check out early on, distancing himself from Weimer in second and Windham in third. Stewart was the man on the move in the first half of the race, and worked past Reed for sixth before knifing his front end in the sand and crashing out of contention. Villopoto mounted a tremendous charge from the back of the pack and moved into fourth just past the halfway point, setting blistering lap times along the way. On the last lap, RV snuck underneath the popular veteran to steal the third and final podium spot, behind Dungey and Weimer.
