Yoshimura-Backed Teams Score Consistent Top-Ten Finishes at Phoenix Supercross

Chino, CA (January 16, 2012) – Yoshimura-backed teams grabbed a string of top-ten finishes at the second round of the 2012 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship Series in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday. The Honda Racing teams, Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki and Yoshimura Suzuki teams used the performance advantage of their Yoshimura products to pull off their consistent top tens in Phoenix.

This was an exciting week for Yoshimura-backed Team Honda Muscle Milk, with the return of rider Trey Canard who missed the opening round in Anaheim while recovering from an earlier injury. “I am excited to be here, and I’m excited to be riding,” said Canard. “It is a bummer for me because I am not right up with the guys that I normally compete with, but overall it was a very successful weekend.” He rode a respectable race aboard his Yoshimura-equipped CRF450R, finishing in seventh place in both his heat and the main event. Canard’s teammate Justin Brayton had a successful heat race, finishing second. Early in the main event, Brayton got tangled up and fell to the back of the pack, but he made up a few positions to finish 14th.

GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham had a notable race, getting a good start in the main and running third most of the way. He eventually was passed by Villopoto but maintained a fourth-place finish.

After setting top lap times during his heat race, Yoshimura-backed GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac got a less than desirable start in the Supercross Lites main event. Tomac put in an inspiring ride, making his way from 15th to fourth aboard his Yoshimura-equipped CRF250R.

Yoshimura-backed Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson started the night with an impressive third-place result in his heat race and then followed that up with a seventh-place finish in the 15-lap Supercross Lites main event. Rockstar Energy Racing teammate Martin Davalos had a get-off in his heat race but went on to win the LCQ. Unfortunately, he struggled with some issues during the main and was unable to finish the race.

“Phoenix was a good race for me,” said Rockstar Energy Racing’s Anderson. “I got a good start in my heat race and ended up third. In the main, I struggled at the start but I ended up seventh. Hopefully, I’ll improve on that next week. But I’m really happy with where we’re at, and I feel like the things I need to work on can be found in the next week. I’m excited about racing at Dodger Stadium next weekend and hopefully, it will be another good weekend for us.”

Yoshimura Suzuki Racing’s Brett Metcalfe celebrated his first top-10 finish of the 2012 AMA/FIM Supercross season in Phoenix. Metcalfe put in an aggressive ride on his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 and carded a solid ninth-place result.
Consistency was the key to the Aussi rider’s night. Although a bit under the weather, Metcalfe put up a good fight all night long. In his eight-lap heat race, he got a great start on his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 and brought home a sixth-place finish to advance to the Supercross main. In the 20-lap main event, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider again got an excellent start and battled with the front-runners for the first half of the race. In the end, Metcalfe stayed strong and kept his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 in the top 10 when the checkers flew.

“We had a really good week leading up to Phoenix,” said Metcalfe. “I came in a little more confident. In qualifying, I got an awesome start – the Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 just flew down the straightaway. I came through the heat race and ended up sixth… but I knew I had to step it up if I wanted to get a top-10 finish in the main. The Yoshimura Suzuki is getting rippin’ starts, and that’s a huge positive for my game right now. In the main event I tried as hard as I could; about halfway, I started getting passed but I tried to hang tough and hold down a top-10. I was a little under the weather this weekend and it was a tough 20 laps for me, but I managed to get through. This was a much more positive direction for us, and I’m looking forward to having another solid week on the bike and moving up in the field.”

All the Yoshimura-backed teams are looking forward to their next event, the third round of the 2012 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship on Saturday, January 21st, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. You can meet Team Yoshimura Suzuki Racing’s Brett Metcalfe and the Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki riders on Friday, January 20th from 6 to 8 PM at Del Amo Motorsports, 2500 Marine Avenue, Redondo Beach, CA 90278.
