SUPERCROSS HEAT 1

Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto grabbed the holeshot and at the start of heat one and led every inch of the 10-lap heat race. At the finish, he enjoyed an eight-second lead over Davi Millsaps, who actually challenged him in the early going. Brett Metcalfe worked into third after a mediocre start, overtaking Kyle Partridge on the final lap.

SUPERCROSS HEAT 2
James Stewart led the way at the start of the second heat, but Mike Alessi caught him off guard with a pass for the lead at the start of lap two. The race was red flagged on the next lap, however, when Alex Ray crashed and was momentarily knocked out. Ray walked off under his own power, and the race was restarted.

Chad Reed led the way at the restart, leading Alessi, Ryan Dungey and Stewart onto the track. Reed rode a perfect race up front, controlling the lead to the checkered flag, which he greeted four seconds ahead of Stewart, who found his way past both Alessi and Dungey. Dungey held on for third, but he seemed to struggle in the extra-long whoop section inside Qualcomm Stadium.

SUPERCROSS LCQ

Jake Weimer holeshot the LCQ, but lost control of the lead when Justin Sipes snuck by on the first lap. Weimer dive underneath the leader at the start of lap two and took control of the lead, but Sipes ran into the back of Weimer’s machine and went down. This left Bob Kiniry in control of second and the last ticket to the main event.

SUPERCROSS MAIN EVENT
When the gate dropped at the start of the 20-lap Supercross main event, Metcalfe was quickest off the line and led Weimer, Villopoto, Dungey and Reed through turn one. Metcalfe enjoyed the lead for nearly two laps before Villopoto took control on his Mike Williamson-tuned Kawasaki. Metcalfe held control of second for a bit longer before Reed and Stewart found their way past. Reed glued himself to Villopoto’s rear wheel in the early stages, while Stewart held control of third. Tragedy struck for Stewart, though near the halfway point when he lost control in the whoops and crashed off the track. Stewart was stuck under his bike for nearly a lap and rejoined the race a lap down. He would eventually finish 15th.
Up front, Villopoto maintained control of the lead with Reed intermittently closing in and dropping back. When lappers came into play, however, Reed really closed in and he capitalized on the traffic by taking control of the lead on lap 18 and bringing the crowd to its feet. RV was having none of it, though, and snuck underneath the Australian in the last turn to retake the lead for good. At the finish, the pair were less than two seconds apart, and the San Diego crowd was treated to the best main event of the season thus far.
Dungey finished the race a lonely third, well behind the lead duo. The former champion forced his way past Weimer early on, sending the Kawasaki over a berm and to an eventual last-place finish. Fourth went to holeshot artist Metcalfe, who battled tooth-in-nail with veteran Kevin Windham. Fortunately for Metcalfe, Windham took a spill in the whoops with two laps to go. Josh Hansen turned in his best finish of the season in fifth, while Honda’s Justin Brayton toughed it out for sixth after a horrific practice crash earlier in the day.
