Race Report – Atlanta SX 2012

SUPERCROSS HEAT 1

The holeshot for the first Supercross class race of the night went to JGR/Toyota/Yamaha rider James Stewart followed by Muscle Milk Honda’s Cole Seely, Hart & Huntington/Dodge/Kawasaki’s Josh Hansen, and Stewart’s teammate Davi Millsaps. Before the end of the first lap, though, Millsaps took over third from Hansen and began to set his sights on Seely in second. Further back in the pack, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer had climbed his way up to fifth, but would drop back to seventh before the end of the race. On the seventh lap, Millsaps made his way around Seely in a turn following a difficult rhythm section to take over second. From there, things didn’t change as Stewart took the win followed by Millsaps, Seely, Hansen, and MotoConcepts’ Mike Alessi.

SUPERCROSS HEAT 2

Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey jumped off the gate first to take the holeshot followed by Yoshimura Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe and BTOSports.com/Suzuki’s Matt Georke. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto was back in fifth, but before the end of the first lap, he had worked his way up to third behind Metcalfe. On the third lap, Dungey went down in a turn just as Villopoto had made his way around Metcalfe for second. With that Villopoto took over the lead, Metcalfe dropped into second with Dungey third. One lap later, though, Dungey worked his way past Metcalfe for second. It would prove too late, though, as Villopoto already had built up an insurmountable lead. When the checkered flag flew, Villopoto took the win followed by Dungey and Metcalfe.

VMS/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Bobby Kiniry took the holeshot but was quickly passed by Hart & Huntington/Dodge/Kawasaki’s Kyle Partridge who then made a mistake in the sand section, allowing Kiniry to take over the lead again. 2. 2. Kyle Partridge (Kaw)

SUPERCROSS MAIN EVENT

The holeshot for the start of the Supercross class main went to Muscle Milk Honda’s Cole Seely followed by Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, JGR/Toyota/Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps, and Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Brayton. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto sat in sixth while JGR/Toyota/Yamaha’s James Stewart was in ninth.

As the laps worn on, Villopoto slowly picked off riders in his bid to work up to the front of the pack while Stewart did likewise only a few positions behind Villopoto. Up front, Seely continued to hold down the lead over Dungey and Millsaps. Then on lap eight Dungey made a pass on Seely while Villopoto watched from the third position with Stewart—who was beginning to catch Villopoto—in fourth.

At the halfway mark, Villopoto made his way around Seely with Stewart doing likewise shortly after that. With nine laps to go, Dungey held down the lead followed by Villopoto, Stewart, and Seely. In the final stages of the race, Seely dropped back to sixth behind Millsaps and his Muscle Milk Honda teammate, Brayton. Up front, Villopoto closed the gap on Dungey and attempted a pass before nearly going down. After that, Dungey held on to take the win followed by Villopoto. Behind the top two, Stewart completed the podium ahead of Millsaps and Brayton.
