SUPERCROSS QUALIFYING

HEAT 1

The first Supercross heat race was a bore, as Ryan Villopoto ripped out of the gate on his Mike Williamson-tuned KX450F and absolutely destroyed the field. RV’s Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate Jake Weimer rode a solid race and finished second, in spite of momentarily losing control of the position late in the race to a hard-charging Kyle Chisholm. After starting sixth, Chisholm caught fire and methodically worked his way through the field on his Jeff Ward Racing Kawasaki, passing both Broc Tickle and Weimer on the same lap to move as high as second, before settling into third at the finish. Tickle held on for fourth, well ahead of Mike Alessi, who started second but couldn’t hold the pace.

HEAT 2

Wil Hahn snared the holeshot aboard his new Muscle Milk Honda, but he was quickly displaced by JGR Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps, who led the way across the finish line all eight laps. Justin Brayton worked his way into second early on and shadowed Millsaps’ every move, but could do nothing to work past the big Yamaha rider. Millsaps rode a flawless race for the win, just ahead of Brayton. A distant third went to Geico Honda’s Kevin Windham, who worked through the field; his every pass bringing the crowd to life. Fourth went to Yoshimura Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe, while Valli/Star/Yamaha rider Nico Izzi earned fifth, just ahead of holeshot artist Hahn.

LCQ

Jeff Ward Racing’s Josh Grant took a start-to-finish win in the Supercross LCQ. Star/Valli/Rockstar/Yamaha rider Bob Kiniry gave Grant a run for his money and challenged briefly for the lead, but ultimately settled for a safe second, and a trip to the main event.

SUPERCROSS MAIN EVENT

Justin Brayton was quickest off the line and led Villopoto and the rest through turn one. The Honda rider enjoyed the lead for only a lap and a half before the champ dove past on the inside of a corner, but he did a good job of staying close to Villopoto for several laps before allowing him to slip away. Millsaps held down third in the early going but could not fend off the advances of Weimer and eventually WIndham, who seemed to really catch fire at the halfway point.

Up front, Villopoto maintained a steady five-second lead over Brayton, who in turn led Weimer by four seconds. Windham, alone in fourth, set out after Weimer and methodically chopped away at the distance between them. The fan favorite found his way past Weimer on lap 16 and into third, then immediately inherited some breathing room when the Kawasaki rider flew off the track. Millsaps capitalized on Weimer’s mistake and took control of fourth for good. Weimer re-entered the track in time to salvage fifth, ahead of Chisholm, who was having a great ride in sixth.

At the finish, Villopoto posted a convincing win, well ahead of Brayton and Windham. Millsaps would go on to finish in fourth, Weimer fifth, and Marvin Musquin in sixth, who had made a late race pass on Chisholm in his final ride aboard the KTM SX-F 350.
