Derrick Hernandez has quietly been stalking the leaders in the 450 Novice class this year maintaining a presence ahead of the pack.  He started off the year with a pair of moto wins to take the overall and ended the series ranked second in the class.  We caught up with Hernandez at the Pala round of the Spring Cup series to find out a little more about him.

How long have you been riding?
I started in 2005, so for 7 years now.

You started out a little later than some kids?
I started around 16 or so.  Before I started racing motocross I was real big into baseball, I did that for 15 years.  Other than that there wasn’t much else I was really competitive in.  I played football, soccer and pretty much everything really.

You were a regular racer with old club, how do you like the new series now that Transworld has the reins?
It’s actually really good, there’s so much more of a turnout it makes it fun.  For a while it was starting to die down in my class and now it’s much more fun because there is so much competition out here.

You enjoy the bigger gates with more riders?
Yeah, it makes it much more fun and challenging.

Are you going to keep doing the series this year?
Yeah, I am going to keep doing all of them.

What are you goals with motocross?
For this year I want finish off a couple more series, then I plan to move to 450 Intermediate and see how that goes.  I am starting to get comfortable with my new bike and my times aren’t far off the Intermediates’ times anymore.  So probably for the Extreme Prize Series I will switch to Intermediate.
