Race Report: Las Vegas SX 2012

SUPERCROSS HEAT 1
Davi Millsaps rocketed off the line during the first heat race of night on his JGR Yamaha, and took the holeshot ahead of Jake Weimer and Gavin Faith. Not too far behind them were Andrew Short and Tyler Bowers. Short quickly started to make some ground on Faith, and caught the rider within the next lap. Once short moved into third place, he tried to make some moves on Weimer, but he couldn’t get it done. Meanwhile, Broc Tickle started to move through the pack, and found himself in fifth place halfway through the race. Faith, who had a good run at the beginning of the race, had crashed after the whoop section, and nearly landed in the oncoming lane. Josh Grant had suffered from a bad start at the beginning of the race, but picked off riders one by one as the laps counted down, and with two laps to go, he moved his way into fifth. When the heat race came to a close, Millsaps threw a big whip to celebrate his win, while Weimer and Short finished second and third.

SUPERCROSS HEAT TWO

Close behind was Justin Brayton, Nico Izzi, Justin Sipes, Ryan Dungey, and Brett Metcalfe. Coming into the second lap, Brayton started to apply some pressure on Alessi, and as the two riders entered the whoop section, the MCR rider had bobbled, which allowed the Muscle Milk Honda rider to pass. Soon after, Izzi made the pass on Alessi, while Dungey had caught up, too. On the next lap, Dungey made the pass on Alessi, but the MCR rider faught back, but couldn’t get his position back. Further back in the pack, Nick Wey tried making some moves on Sipes for sixth, but couldn’t find an open door. Over halfway through the race, Izzi went down, but remounted in fifth, not too far behind Metcalfe. As the laps counted down, Brayton had an easy victory over Dungey and Alessi.

SUPERCROSS MAIN EVENT
Mike Alessi grabbed the holeshot in the final 450 main event of the 2012 season, but Ryan Dungey didn’t let him out of his sight as the exited the first corner, and he made the pass soon after. When the riders completed the first lap, it was Dungey, Alessi, Brett Metcalfe, Jake Weimer, Nico Izzi, and Davi Millsaps. Metcalfe sat behind Alessi for a couple laps, but finally went for the pass and took over second. Alessi tried to come back, but made a couple mistakes, which allowed Weimer, Millsaps, and Izzi to get around. After five laps, Dungey had a comfortable nine-second lead on Metcalfe. Weimer was quickly gaining some ground on Metcalfe, and made the pass by the seventh lap.

By the halfway point, Dungey kept pulling away, while Millsaps was on the rear wheel of Weimer. The two riders kept the crowd on their feet as they exchanged position and banged bars for a couple laps. In the end, Millsaps made the pass stick coming out of the whoops. By that time, Dungey had 15-seconds on Millsaps. While it seemed like everyone had settled into their positions, Brayton had snuck up on Weimer, and got him before the end of the race. When checkered flag came out, Dungey gave Red Bull KTM another win, while Millsaps and Brayton rounded off the podium.
