In front of a sold out crowd Saturday night at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas for the 2012 Superscross season finale, DNA Energy Drink / Jeff Ward Racing rider Josh Grant rode to a strong fifth place finish capping off a respectable opening season for the first year team. His teammate Kyle Chisholm was unfortunately sidelined for the last race of the season due to a wrist / arm injury taken on around the last couple of rounds.
Leading up to the SX Main, Grant finished his SX Group A first qualifying practice 12th fastest with a lap time of 1:06.055. In the final SX Group A qualifying practice Grant picked up some time and speed from his first practice as he laid down a lap time of 1:05.619 but so did his competitors as he would finish the last session 14th quickest.
Grant’s qualifying times would put him 14th fastest overall in SX Heat 1 with the seventh gate pick. After the drop of the gate, Grant would fall in line ninth but managed to climb four spots to ride to a solid fifth place finish to advance to the SX Main solidifying the lone entry of the evening for the DNA Energy Drink / Jeff Ward Racing team.
The SX Main saw Grant settle into eighth after the hole shot and one lap later to ninth. By lap 3 he regained eighth where he would remain until lap 6 when he climbed another spot to take over seventh. Three laps later he raced his way to sixth and by lap 11 he found himself in the fifth spot where he would remain until the checkered flag waved ending the 2012 Supercross season.
Chisholm ended the 2012 Supercross season 11th in series points with 143, twenty-three points outside of the top-10. Grant’s fifth place finish moved him up one spot to 17th in series points and gives him a boost of confidence headed into the 2012 Outdoor season.
Up next for the DNA Energy Drink / Jeff Ward Racing team is the first ace of the Outdoor season in Sacramento at Hangtown on May 19.
