The third day of the 2012 X Games marked the conclusion of more typical motocross based events, as Women’s Moto-X and Speed and Style took to the tight course laid out on the Staples Center floorspace. The layout, which included two rhythm sections, whoops, and a ramp to dirt infield launch required riders in both disciplines to claim good starts, and is exactly what Vicki Golden and Mike Mason did to earn the gold medals. This is Golden’s second straight win in the event, as she duplicated her 2011 run to best Tarah Geiger and Livia Lancelot. For Mason, it was redemption, as he earned silver in last year’s Speed and Style to Nate Adams, despite winning the race portion.
The six racer field launched down the wooden roll-in and into the first turn and into the hairpin turn with Golden at the point over Geiger and Meghan Rutledge. Lancelot would pass Rutledge to take third postion early on, and from there the running order was set. With an open track ahead, Golden notched off 10 smooth laps and distanced herself from second place Geiger. Rutledge and Lancelot looks destined to battle, but a washout in the turn just before the finish by Rutledge allowed Lancelot to pull away with a large margin at the line.
Jessica Patterson and Tatum Sik made contact in the second turn, which sent both racers to the ground and forced them to claw their way back. The brief sprint on the small track would make it impossible for either to close the distance between themselves and the front runners.
