Race Report: Red Bud MX 2012

450 Moto 1
The start of the first 450 moto served up a giant pileup in sweeping left turn, claiming many riders including MotoConcepts’ Mike Alessi and Chaparral/L&Mc/Honda’s Andrew Short. The likes of Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, and Christian Craig avoided the crash and settled immediately into the lead respectively. Dungey, however, picked up exactly where he left off at Budds Creek and checked out immediately. Stewart, on the other hand, showed that has little time back on the bike fading a bit throughout the moto after a crash early on that allowed chasers to get by him. Jake Weimer took over where Stewart left off, settling into second place while Craig faded back into the field.
As time ticked away, Dungey continued to build on his giant lead, clearly having little issue with the intense heat. 30-plus seconds behind, Justin Brayton, Tyla Rattray, and Broc Tickle clamored to secure podium-level points to take with into the second moto. Although Stewart showed some signs of rust, he still managed to hold onto sixth place. Privateer Cole Thompson raised eyebrows clicking off fast laps all moto long, sealing himself seventh place, finishing just behind James Stewart, and Tyla Rattray’s first outing on his KX450F since his crash at Hangtown yielded him some encouraging results. But at moto’s end, it was all Dungey, all day. Another checkered flag for the Red Bull KTM team.

450 Moto 2
Mike Alessi scored the holeshot of the final 450 moto of the day, but Dungey’s pace was too much for the MotoConcepts rider. Dungey, once again, stepped into the lead and took off. Alessi, however, did hold his ground for second place for the duration of the moto, solidifying a spot on the podium. James Stewart looked cool and collected in third, keeping Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton at bay, and improving on his first moto score. When the dust settled, Dungey had staked on yet another 1-1 performance and increased his sizable points lead. Tyla Rattray’s solid performance earned him fourth overall, so he is a safe bet for a podium performance next week in Millville with another week of seat time under his belt.
