Monday Kickstart – Southwick MX 2012

Perhaps one of the craziest things we have seen in a while happened in the second 450 moto. After jumping out to the early lead, Dungey went down hard, and in the process, knocked his gas cap off and lost gas. Before the race, the team precisely measures the amount of gas needed to get him through a 30-minute-plus-two-laps moto, so if any is lost he won’t finish the race. After working his way back into the lead—and with only three laps remaining in the moto—Dungey dove into the pits for a quick splash of gas. He returned to find himself in second behind Rattray, but there just wasn’t enough time for him to work his way back into the lead. After the race, Dungey said that he probably wouldn’t have finished the moto if it wasn’t for his quick pit stop. In this photo, you can not only see just how unforgiving the Southwick track was this year, but the buttpatch “4Art” that Dungey was wearing in honor of Art Jefferson. Art served as paddock concierge at the Nationals. He suffered a stroke in Minnesota. Following the race, the AMA and MX Sports held a service for Art.

It’s that time of year again where we start seeing new 2013 gear from various companies. Southwick wasn’t the first time, but we figured we’d mention it anyways. Muscle Milk Honda’s Tommy Hahn was sporting some of Fox’s newest offers in both motos.

Michael Byrne, and all the other Fly sponsored riders, were wearing Fly’s 2013 gear that appears to be very clean and cool looking.

Lastly, the Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda riders were all showing off TLD’s newest gear offerings throughout the day.

Justin Brayton also debuted some new 2013 One Industries gear. The new gear will be available September 1st.

Hahn had his best moto finish of the year with his third place in the first moto. Hahn has been filling the shoes of Trey Canard during this outdoor season.
