Race Report: Unadilla 2012

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship made its way to what is the birthplace of American motocross, Unadilla Motorsports in New York state. As the season nears its conclusion, we are reminded of just how quickly it has passed and the events that have transpired. Another chapter was added to the story in New York, as Ryan Dungey claimed KTM its first professional championship in American motocross, while Marvin Musquin took his first overall.

250 Class

Moto One

Zach Bell rocketed out of the gate at the start of the first 250 moto of the day, and led the pack of screaming small-bore riders again in only his second moto. The GEICO Powersports Honda racer’s time at the point would come to an end quickly, as he laid the bike down after venturing into the soft soil. This effectively handed the lead to Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, who had been closing the gap between himself and Bell before the crash. With competitors Justin Barica, Eli Tomac, and Blake Baggett mired deep in the field, Roczen set the pace and went on to win the first moto of his career in the US over teammate Marvin Musquin with little resistance.

Moto Two

Justin Barcia won the drag race to the first turn over teammates Bell and Justin Bogle, and with that, tore off from the rest of the pack. As Barcia stretched his lead, his GEICO stablemate Eli Tomac began to climb from low in the top-five to second place. In just a handful of laps, the two Honda racers were wheel-to-wheel, going rev for rev. A slight mistake by Barica in the valley of the track was all Tomac needed to steal the lead, as he swooped past and wheelied up the steep incline to an eventual second moto win.

As Tomac motored away, the math behind an overall motocross victory was being widely discussed. Due to Barcia and Tomac’s poor first moto scores, Marvin Musquin was en-route to the first overall victory of his American career with 2-3 finishes. Ken Roczen would be another racer to benefit from the off-day had by the top-three in the championship hunt, as he would take third overall despite a sixth-place moto finish and the early signs of sickness.
