Race Report: Monster Energy MXoN 2012

MX1/MX3

Continuing where he left off in the first moto of the day, Cairoli came out swinging as soon as the gate dropped, and he was gone. Ryan Dungey and Justin Barcia took the reigns for Team USA for the final moto of the day, and the two riders were able to fall into the second and third positions. Barcia sat behind Dungey for a couple of laps before he decided to make his way around his teammate. Right when that move happened, Barcia appeared to have cross-rutted when he was right next to Dungey, and that caused the KTM rider to check up on his speed. Consequently, Dungey hit the deck. When Dungey remounted, he struggled to find a spot to enter the track because of the green netting that lined the course, but he finally got back onto the track in 10th.

Herlings was one of the many riders in this race that the fans had their eyes on, but when he suffered from a bad start, it appeared to be all over for the young rider. However, with a few minutes left in the race, he had worked his way all the way up through the pack, and he was nipping at Barcia’s heels. The Honda rider eventually lost the battle to Herlings, and now the KTM rider was catching Cairoli. The two 2012 World Champions pushed each other to the finish, but Herlings was able to make the pass, and Cairoli took the win. Barcia took the last podium spot for USA, and Dungey finished the race in ninth.

When everything was said and done and the scores were calculated, Germany took the win, while Belgium and USA finished second and third, respectively.
