Two Riders, Two Main Events: MotoConcepts Racing Anaheim 1 Report

SPOKANE, WA (January 8, 2013) - The MotoConcepts Racing by Smartop team entered Anaheim with high expectations. With a new corporate sponsor, Smartop, returning riders Mike Alessi (#800 / MCR450), Jake Canada (#23 / MCR250), and the addition of Tony Alessi as Director of Racing, the 2013 Supercross season is set to be another banner year for the revolutionary and nonconformist racing team.
Racer, and team-captain, Mike Alessi building upon his revitalized career, entered Anaheim with increased confidence.  In 2012, Alessi finished runner-up to champion Ryan Dungey in the outdoor Nationals and was the only racer to score points in every round of the AMA Supercross season. Coming out swinging in 2013 and with the sold-out crowd on its feet for the first 450  Heat race of the new-year, it was once again Alessi who threw down his patented holeshot.  With fans and viewers watching live on Speed, Alessi charged out to the lead and transferred directly to the main.
Teammate, Jake Canada, no stranger to the front of the pack, picked up where he left off last year battling against all the factory bikes in his heat race.  Looking fast and comfortable on the white/red MCR250, the likable Canada felt his strong local supporters cheering on his every pass transferring into the night show.
Against the most stacked deck of Factory-backed teams and racers in the sports history, MotoConcepts Racing accomplished what very few teams could; both riders earning spots behind the gate in the main events.  Unfortunately, and with results uncommon for the consistent MCR team, both riders experienced issues, such as a bent (in-half!) handlebar, preventing them from standing atop the podium.
There are positives to take away from Anaheim with overall results certainly more indicative of their talent to come next weekend in Arizona.
