McDade And Bowers Battle Through A Weekend In Baltimore

Mike McDade continues to impress in the Arenacross series, as he claimed another main event win and overall in Baltimore.

By Matt Wozney

After solid rides last weekend in Worcester, the Kawasaki trio of Babbitt’s/Monster Energy/AMSOIL’s Tyler Bowers and Zach Ames and Mosites Motorsports’ Mike McDade were the favorites going into Baltimore. The 1st Mariner Arena played host to the second stop of the 2013 AMSOIL Arenacross series and two nights of racing provided great racing action.

The track in Baltimore was much different from the Worcester opener, as the expected hard pack was back after the very soft conditions riders competed on in Massachusetts.  The riders enjoyed the track more throughout the weekend, even with some slick areas in the flat corners that tested all riders.

Bowers and McDade stood on top each night in Baltimore. McDade grabbed nearly every holeshot in the main events and Bowers muscled his way through the top 5-10 to grab podium spots and maintain his points lead. Saturday night was a special one for McDade, as he was able top Bowers for the first time with a 3-1 overall finish to Bowers’ 1-3 scores.  With a truly privateer bike and a 40-50 hour a week “regular job,” McDade’s win was tremendous over the very powerful Babbitt’s/Monster Energy/AMSOIL/Kawasaki team.

Tyler Bowers is coming under attack from the likes of Robby Marshall (shown) and others, but he maintains his hold over the point standings.

Tyler Bowers and Zach Ames both had solid nights, and Bowers was the overall winner on Friday night. Besides a poor 10th place in the second main on Friday, Ames continued his podium prowess.  These riders are tight teammates and will be the ones to watch for at each round of the series.

While the eyes of the fans were on the top three, many had their eyes on one rider making his Arenacross debut in Baltimore, that being Babbitt’s/Monster Engery/AMSOIL/Kawasaki’s Tyler Villopoto. His debut was less than stellar due to first turn incidents and tip overs in corners, resulting in every main event finish being out of the top-ten.

The weekend’s head-to-head racing proved to be as exciting as one would expect, as both nights featured different winners and close battles. Friday’s pairing between South Of The Border/KTM Of Lumberton’s Robby Marshall and Team Faith/Fly Racing/KTM’s Kelly Smith ended with Marshall besting the veteran in a close two-lap battle, while Saturday night would come down to Mike McDade and Bowers. The two riders fought through every turn and lane of track, and at the flag, it was McDade with the win.

Other notable finishes in Baltimore include Team Faith/Fly Racing/KTM’s Nathan Skaggs, who finished on the podium with a solid second in Friday night’s final Arenacross main event, his best finish so far in 2013. Teammate Kelly Smith was also a strong finisher on Friday night, riding to third overall on the night. MotoSport/Spinechillers/KTM’s Willy Browning hasn’t turned in the smoothest qualifying finishes so far this series, but he put it together for the main events and finished in the top-five overall both Friday and Saturday night. MotoSport Hillsboro/Fly Racing’s Gared Steinke finished fourth overall on Saturday night, and the California native is very capable of finishing on the podium throughout the series.

Tyler Bowers continues to hold the red plate going into stop three at Grand Rapids. After a solid weekend, McDade moves into second over Ames and Marshall. Fifth place is a tie between Steinke and Willy Browning, who have 73 points apiece.

Veteran Jim Neese grabbed the win in Friday night’s Lites class. The weekend marked his final round in the series, as he retired after Saturday night.

Veteran racer Jim Neese made a strong appearance taking the win in Friday’s Lites main event, a surprise to even himself, as he stated it would be his final event. Moose Racing’s Michael Willard finished second while KMS/Mandingo Pickles/Scott’s Dave Ginolfi rounded off the Friday podium.

Neese’s qualifying did not go as well on Saturday night, as he had final gate pick in the back row for the main event. However, a massive plot twist occurred in the Lites main event. A pileup on the landing of the catapult jump 12 laps in caused a red flag.  Since the race was already past halfway, the riders were forced to line up wheel-to-wheel on the start straight. Michael Willard would turn in a strong and consistent ride over the final laps and take the main event win. BWREngines.com/Alias rider Kyle White made his first podium appearance by taking second place, and Hillview Motorsports’ Steve Roman took third.

Scott Zont remains the Lites class point leader, despite an incident in Saturday’s main event where he collided with a track worker. He leads by ten points over Michael Willard as they head to Grand Rapids.

Tyler Villpoto's indoor debut was a bit tumultuous, but many expect him to become a threat as the season continues on.
