MotoConcepts Racing: Oakland SX Report
SPOKANE, WA (January 28, 2013) - MotoConcepts Racing by Smartop racer Mike Alessi put in his best race of the season at Oakland with a hard-earned 5th place. It was a break-through ride and proved he has the speed to stay up front.
Mike Alessi would start the night with a solid performance in 450 Heat #2. With a typical strong start on the MCR450, Alessi battled with the likes of 2012 SX Champion Ryan Villopoto and James Stewart in a stacked heat race. Alessi attacked the track, searched out unique lines knowing the track would be drastically different in the main, and finished a strong 3rd.
When the gate dropped for the 450 Main the crowd went wild as the riders rocked across the first whoop section. Carnage ensued when Chad Reed uncharacteristically lost control of his bike and plowed into several riders in a bowl turn. Alessi was committed in the whoops but somehow was able to slam on the brakes and avoid 3 factory bikes that literally where shooting towards him.
Riding a solid, smart and consistent race, Alessi stayed up front and kept the leaders in sight. With his best result in hand, Alessi crossed the finish line in 5th. Without pre-season testing support from the factories, MCR continues to develop its race bike, but without question, its near perfect and the confidence of race night in Oakland lays a foundation for future rounds. Mike is on the gas and Anaheim is only six days away……..
Alessi’s teammate, Jake Canada, aboard his #23 MCR250 would be the first MCR rider to start the night in 250 Heat #2. While not getting the jump out of the gate he expected, Jake was at the very back of the pack entering turn 1. Rather than diving into the pack, Jake smartly slammed on the brakes, dove as tight as humanly possible and accelerated toward turn 2 passing countless riders down the rhythm section. Jake, a rider known for creative line selection, sliced his way through the pack to finish 5th.
In the 250 Main, Canada would fall victim to a first turn crash and again needed to work his way up to the front-runners. Throughout the race Jake steadily moved passed his competition and had his sights set on several riders late in the race. Unfortunately, a late crash sent Canada off the track and back to the pits but the speed, skill and ability to move up certainly demonstrated his skill set. His hometown race at Anaheim next week, where he finished 5th two weeks ago, could mark his first trip to the podium.
