Villopoto and Davalos Top Qualifying in San Diego

The rain threatened to drown the track inside San Deigo’s Qualcomm Stadium on Friday, but Dirt Wurx covered the course with tarps before too much damage was done. The sun did its part today drying out the sections that were victim of the previous evening’s downpour, as well, leaving a pretty tacky track for Supercross’ finest to rip some fast laps for qualifying. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto turned the fastest lap in first practice in the premier class, while fellow Kawasaki rider Martin Davalos clicked off the fastest in the Lites class. He and his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki snuck in ahead of Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac, who was just over a tenth of a second slower.
The second, and final, practice of the day proved to offer tougher track conditions, as the fast times from the first session held up at the end of qualifying. Both Villopoto and Davalos retained their fast times, qualifying first and solidifying first gate pick in each of their respective classes. Check out the top five qualifying times below, and tune in to Speed for live coverage of the race tonight at 7pm Pacific Standard Time.
