GoPro Midseason Recap: The Rise of Millsaps

No one thought the 2010 Supercross season would be trumped in scope and excitement, but as we pass the midway point of the 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, there is an argument that we may, indeed, have another historical series in our midst.

What started as a flash-in-the-pan moment of greatness for a rejuvenated Davi Millsaps developed into a full-blown siege for a title. The most consistentracer on the track for the first half of the 2013 season, Millsaps has emerged as the darkhorse determined to knock the preseason favorites from their pedestals.

As for his competition, and ultimately the odds-on title contenders, a rocky start and an injury have kept them at bay, but each continues to launch their assaults. Defending champion Ryan Villopoto struggled at the opening round inside Angel Stadium, stifling any chance for early momentum. Slowly but surely, however, the resilient Monster Energy Kawasaki racer has chipped away at Millsaps’ points lead, clawing his way back to title contention by the midway point of the season.

Similar misfortune found its way into James Stewart’s campaign at Angel Stadium, although it was well before the gates dropped for racing that Stewart’s destiny changed. In practice, a mistimed plant of his foot tore the ACL inside his knee. Before it had even started, Stewart’s season had virtually ended. His season hanging in the balance, Stewart chose to ride, knee or noknee. They say that although you can’t win a title at Anaheim I, you can definitely lose it. Such was the case for Stewart. A racer to his absolute core, however, Stewart carried on. His perseverance paid off in Atlanta, as the injured Suzuki racer ripped the holeshot in the main event and checked out. The win marked the 45th of his career, and justified his choice to continue racing with a torn ACL.

As the racers lean into the series’ turn, GoPro athletes Millsaps and Villopoto have presented themselves as the title contenders into the final stretch of the series. And if the first half of the season was any indication, we are in for legendary chase for the championship.
