How did you start riding? I just got started riding when I was about 3 on a PW50 that my dad got for me for my birthday. Obviously my dad is in the industry, so it kind of came that way, but there was no pressure. If I really liked it I could keep going with it, and I loved it. What makes you choose motocross over other sports? I like that it is an individual sport. It’s not that I don’t like working with other kids on a team, it’s just that I like being by myself, making my decisions on the track and just the challenge, I love the challenge of it. How often do you ride?Kai Aiello, 12 Temecula, CA Sponsors: Yamaha, GYTR, Yamalube, Fox, Race Tech, X-Brand Goggles, Cycle Gear, JFT Motorsports Kai Aiello has been making big strides in his speed in the last year aboard his YZ85. Through the past several months, his skills have taken him to the front of the pack in the always competitive 85150F age classes. Many days when the checkered flag flies and Kai takes his helmet off, he has an huge grin as he shares his race with his family and is one of the riders that make it obvious they are truly having fun. We’ve watched many bar to bar races Aiello has had with his competitors and he never gives up and fights the battle. We stopped by the Aiello family pit to learn more about him.
We end up riding usually 3 times a week. Usually we practice twice then we come out to these races on Sundays to race.
What is your goal in motocross?
If I could, I’d like to make it all the way to the pros, but we’ve always said I need to treat it as a fun hobby, and then if it works it, it works out. If it doesn’t I will just do it for fun and continue on with it.
Have you ever thought about doing any of the amateur nationals?
Yes, we’ve done Mammoth, this past year was our second year. I want to try to qualify for Loretta’s next year, that would be really fun to try to race that.
How did Mammoth go for you?
Mammoth was good, my first motos were great. I got 12th in the first moto, then got a horrible start in the second moto and had to work my way up and got up to 21st I think.
You recently got to be a test rider for the Transworld MX 85cc shootout. How was that experience?
That was really fun, I got to ride all of the bikes and see what I thought about them. It was definitely a good experience.
Was it easy to tell the differences between the bikes?
Yeah, there were definitely big differences between them all, but also some similarities. They were all good in their different ways, they were all great bikes.
What is it that you like about the Muscle Milk/Transworld MX Race Series?
First, I love the transponder timing, that’s great. You can also count on great competition every single weekend. The tracks they go to are the best tracks in SoCal, and also just that you can count on a full gate.
What else do you do besides motocross?
I BMX with my brother a lot, I try to mountain bike a lot for training. I also really like to run, I’m on the cross country team at my school.
