15th Annual Surfercross: Day One

Every July a crew of professional motocross racers and surfers team up for a one of a kind competition aptly named “Surfercross.”  Thanks to numerous sponsors and organizer Jeremy Albrecht, the two-day event has become a Southern California moto tradition. On-track action filled day one of this year’s running and took place at Milestone MX Park in Riverside, California. The morning began with the random draw of partners, which included the pairings of Sunny Garica and Cooper Webb, Eddie Valdez and Kyle Regal, and Ryan Dudek and Chad Robbins, and the intense relay racing action began soon after.

Cooper Webb and Sunny Garcia were instantly considered the favorites one their pairing was announced, but few suspected the wildcards of Ryan Dudek and Chad Robbins and Weston Peick and Brandon Polfer. These two teams battled from the moment the gate dropped until the checkered flag was waved in both motos, with Dudek and Robbins sweeping the racing portion of the event. Of all the surfers on the track, Robbins and Polfer were easily the most talented, as they hit Milestone’s massive leaps without hesitation and distanced themselves from the rest of the surfing pack.

While these four battled up front, Webb, Kyle Partridge, and Colton Udall fought for third place in the second moto. Webb handled the charges put on by Partridge and kept his team in the position. In the final results, however, it would Udall and his partner Chava Greenlee taking third, thanks to their third place finish in moto one.

Surfercross Industry Class

An Industry class is also offered at Surfercross, and riders from dirt and water were paired for a relay of their own. Sure, the pace is a bit slower, but the battles were just as intense. Our own Brendan Lutes partnered with Josh Shorter of SPY Optics, and the two trounced the field in the first moto. Lutes overcame a poor start by slicing through the pack and proceeded to build a lead that put them 13 seconds ahead of the second place by the final flag. In the second moto, the Lutes/Shorter team was beaten by Shawn Heit and Greg Garrison, but their 1-2 moto finishes gave them the overall in the motocross portion of the event.
