Connor Strait, 18 Menifee, CA Sponsors: Mom and Dad, Hinson, Yoshimura, 100%, Renthal, C4 MX, Allsports Honda California is the destination for many young racers looking to move their racing to the next level. Connor Strait is one of those racers looking to move up to the top level of the sport in the future. Strait came out to the opening round of the Muscle Milk TWMX Fall Cup race at Competitive Edge and burned some fast lines into the track. The intermediate rider competed in three classes through the day with a strong showing in each one. Strait has a smooth style on the track with consistent speed throughout the race that caught our attention How did you get started racing? Actually it started with my dad, one of my dad’s friends rode and told us to come out. We ended up going, I was 3 years old and have loved it ever since. I got my first bike when I was 4. What brought you out to California from Colorado? The riding and the racing. Colorado is sweet, but there’s a lot of desert and not a lot of races. I came to California to chase the dream and go to as many races as we can and live the California life. What has been your biggest accomplishment so far in your racing? I would say just improving over the last two years. I had a really bad year last year and got hurt three or four times. Just being healthy and improving every weekend and getting faster. We are going to go to every single national this year and try to get some good results. Have you done any of the amateur nationals before? Yes, I’ve done all the Texas rounds, the spring nationals, I’ve also done Dodge, which we are also doing this year, and also Branson. How have you done in those races?
The only one I had a standout finish in was Branson three or four years ago. I won both my heats in the Novice class, and I think I ended up 5th in the Novice class, but Novice class is not where I want to be.
This year will be quickly coming to an end, what are your plans for the next year?
Actually this year all we have done is prepare for next year. I want to do good at Dodge and start off good, just try to hit all the nationals and stay in the top five. Hopefully get a couple titles and improve every race.
What is your ultimate goal and do you have a plan in place for it?
I’m going to do the Intermediate class this year, then next year we are going to race the pro class and hopefully get some points and eventually get some help from people and then race the circuit and see how far I can get. It’s a big step to get on a Muscle Milk Honda level team, but I’d like to get a couple years experience and see what I can really do.
What is included in your typical week to prepare for the races?
We usually take Monday and Tuesday off after the races to regroup, then starting Wednesday I ride my road bicycle every day and then ride 3-4 hours every day. I also work at Crossfit 951 in Menifee, and that is also really good cross training. My days are pretty full just with physical activity and school. I’m just trying to live the life to make it somewhere.
What do you think of the Muscle Milk/Transworld MX Series?
The Transworld Series is awesome, they always seem to get a really good turnout. They seem to keep it on schedule compared to some of the other California races. It makes for a really good day of racing.
