Last Saturday night’s action in Atlanta during the Monster Energy Supercross 450 Main Event was incredible. Mike Alessi jumped out to the early lead and was pursued by James Stewart for just over a lap until the Yoshimura Suzuki rider tucked the front-end in a slick turn. This moved Ken Roczen and Ryan Villopoto, the top two contenders for the title, up a spot and onto Alessi for the lead. Because both Roczen and Villopoto are trained by Aldon Baker and work side by side at Villopoto’s Florida ranch, it is safe to assume that they know exactly what their rival will do in the high-pressure situation. When both riders passed Alessi, the battle for the lead was set, with Villopoto maintaining the spot until a costly late-race mistake. The defending champion hammered the throttle of his┬áMonster Energy Kawasaki a bit too hard in a flat turn and broke his momentum, allowing rookie Roczen to slip past. The Red Bull KTM rider was stellar through the final laps and held on to take his second victory of the year.

We can write about a race all we want, but nothing beats seeing it play out on video. Take a look at the GoPro footage from the Hero 3+ cameras attached to both rider’s helmets and relive the excitement…

As epic as the entire video is, Villopoto’s move to the inside of Stewart on the ground was the mark of a champion. The quick action helped him avoid what could have been a costly mistake and allowed him to pass Ryan Dungey for third place in one swoop.
