Darren Sweet is a young, up and coming racer with big plans in his future. Looking up to none other than the great Ricky Carmichael, Sweet hopes to have the same success in the sport as the G.O.A.T. Sweet can be found at any local track aboard his 125 and the kid really knows how to make that YZ sing. Keep an eye out for Sweet as he plans to hit his first set of major amateur nationals this year.
How did you get into motocross?
Well, I started riding when I was about four at Amago. I guess it was Ricky Carmichael that ultimately got me interested in motocross. I was watching him kill the competition so it influenced me to start riding.
Does your family have a history in motocross?
My dad had a little Honda XR when he was younger and he was one of the reasons I started riding, as well. He probably didn’t think I’d take it so serious (laughs).
Do you participate in any other sports or hobbies?
Nope, motocross is my life and my passion (laughs).
How far do you plan to take motocross?
I’m hoping to turn this into a career some day. Make my way through the ranks and turn pro in a few years is the plan for me.
Do you have any goals that you’d like to accomplish by the end of the year?
The plan for this year is to hit a few amateur nationals and get some good consistent finishes under my belt to prepare myself for the following year.
Have you been to any amateur nationals before?
No, I haven’t. I’m trying to get in as much seat time as possible leading up to those races.
Do you have a particular rider whose style or speed you try to emulate?
Growing up, it was all Ricky Carmichael. Ricky was one of my major influences that got me into motocross, so I’m just trying to be like him.
Have you visited any other previous rounds of the Muscle Milk TWMX race series?
No, this is actually my first time. We’ve been going to other races, but this is my first time at these races and it looks like a lot of great riders are here today, so it should be a good one.
What is it about dirt bikes that you find so intriguing?
It’s a total adrenaline rush! This is the best thing I’ve ever been involved with and I just love this sport more than anything.
