Martin and Roczen Tops | 2014 New Jersey SX Practice Report

MARTIN AND TOMAC TOPS | 2014 NEW JERSEY SX PRACTICE REPORT

The afternoon practice and qualifying sessions have come to a close in East Rutherford, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The track was protected from the overnight rains by plastic tarps, but practice was delayed due to moisture that found its way onto the track through the cracks in the tarps. The first sessions proved to actually be a tad dusty in some sections, though, as the track was constructed extra early this week and had been sitting in the sun and wind. The clouds gathered and rain began to fall during the second sessions, however. For the 250s, the precipitation produced great conditions, but by the time the 450s wrapped things up, the track surface was slippery at best. Rain continued to fall after practice and the weather report calls for a 50% chance of rain throughout the rest of the night, but as we type this the sun is shining and the track crews are working feverishly to whip the course into shape.

Jeremy Martin was the fastest in the 250 class.

Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin was quickest in the 250 class with a 55.066 lap, besting privateer Honda rider Vince Friese’s 56.029. GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle, the rider who stands to gain the most tonight in New Jersey with the absence of points leader Martin Davalos, came home third with a 56.305.

“I felt great out there,” said Martin. “I was able to get a good lap in before the rain started to fall, and I feel good about tonight.”

“I’m not thinking about the championship,” said Bogle. “I mean, look at my number plate. It’s black. I don’t even have the points lead.”

Ken Roczen was the fastest rider in the first timed session, and his status held when rain began to fall before the start of the second session.

In the 450 class, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen set the fastest lap time in the first session, as the slippery conditions in the second go-round slowed things down considerably. Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart was second-fastest a few hundredths behind, while the man who could wrap it all up tonight, Ryan Villopoto, came through in third.
