When we first got to the 2014 High Point MX last weekend, we thought the riders would be in for a long day on a destroyed course. Southern Pennsylvania had been soaked by rain in the days leading up to the event and the first laps of practice looked more like the infamous Mount Morris mudders from years past. Luckily for everyone involved, the sunshine overhead and extensive work by the track crew had the layout nearly perfect in no time. Dozens of lines were cut through the track and seemed to give riders plenty of options to run charge their way through the field, but that alone is not enough to make waves in the sport’s premier series. As you will see in the GoPro footage from Cole Seely and Ken Roczen, it takes an uncanny knack to predict what the competition will do and strike at the perfect time to get ahead this summer.
