Darryn Durham | Ready To Return

Darryn Durham

2014 has been rough for Darryn Durham. The ever-popular rider came into the season with plenty of speed, but slightly banged up after a pre-season concussion left him sporting a massive black eye. Just a few weeks into the year Durham went down again at Anaheim Two and took another blow to the head, but this hit paired with the previous forced doctors to put a halt to his race season. After being cleared to ride in the spring, the Monster Energy/Pro immediately began prepping for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship and showed impressive speed around the Southern California track until a crash just before the start of the summer broke his lower leg and pushed his return even further back. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the best from DD, but he is poised to come back at the Unadilla stop midway through August. Between motos at Glen Helen last week, we spoke with the Pennsylvania racer about how he’s spent the summer and what the future holds.

I’ve been back on the bike for a week now, and it is super fun to be back. With my leg, I fractured my tibial plateau and got two screws put in. It actually feels pretty good and I’m at about eight weeks since surgery. The doctors were telling me to take it slow coming back, but I feel pretty good already and am moving along what I feel is ahead of schedule.

I plan on racing the last few, starting at Unadilla and to hit the last three. I have a few weeks to get strong and be prepared.

This is Durham’s second injury in the season, and put him on the sidelines for a substantial length of time over the middle portion of the year…

I had to wait until everything healed up and even though it felt like it healed right away, the doctor didn’t want me to stress it out. I got them to release me a little early because I had been doing so much therapy, twice a day for three weeks. It came together really quick.

The first week, I was pretty laid up. After that I flew home to Pennsylvania for a week and a half to visit my family for the High Point National, watched the races, and then came back here for therapy. Now I’m back on the grind.

While on the mend last year, Durham hit the hills with Jeremy Stenberg and crew to film for the recently released video, Chasing the Storm…

Filming for Chasing the Storm was a lot of fun. We did it last winter, when I wasn’t racing Supercross because of injuries. We went on a few trips and did a bunch of freeriding, which I love. I’ll go out and trail ride all day by myself if I have to.

It’s cool to have a part in the video and that all of the punk bands gave the rights to the music for it. It really gives it a cool vibe, like you are watching Crusty back in the day. They have a bunch of good riders, from freestyle guys to Bereman, Borkenhagen, and I in it.

With his contract at Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki up at the end of 2014, these next rounds are critical for Durham and his negotiations heading into next season…

I do have some things on the table (for next year), but I haven’t jumped at anything yet. I am waiting to come back and do well at the last three races, because then the ball is back in my court.
