It’s been several weeks since we joined Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto at Glen Helen during his first day on the all new 2009 Kawasaki KX450F, so we decided to catch up with our guest editorial columnist to see how his Supercross training is going. Needless to say, RV2 looked fantastic aboard his big KX450F. Be sure to prop this video if you like Villopoto’s riding, because he checks the web site often!

RV is my favorite rider, and i could tell in the earlier 450 videos that he wasn’t the happiest with the bike, especially in the Racer X video at Glenn Helen. He looked great, but not as smooth as he usually is, but i am very impressed with his control on the tighter SX track. Hes moving better, and it looks like he finally accepted that you cant muscle a 450 around, and has had to adapt his riding style like all of us do when we move up, but he still looks like the same RV, so im anxious to watch him race on the big bike, should make for some great racing.

I agree, RV is used to holding the throttle pinned everywhere on the track whether it is necessary or not. He is probably realizing that he cannot ride the 450 the same way. I think Bubba had the same problem early on and learned to ride the bike in the middle of the power band. RV will be the second redhed giving Bubba a run for his money.

Finally we are going to see some racing again, and not just the race for second place.I think RV is a more seasoned and patient rider than Stewart was when he came into the motocross class.Hopefully he doesnt’ pull any bonehead type moves and takes it a just a little easy for the 1st couple of races to get his feet wet then as he gets in the groove he’ll really give Bubba something to worry about.

whoever filmed this sucks. and the videos on twmx have the gayest song selections.. I guess when the editor is a SQUID like Maeda, the quality of the site reflects it.. Watching Maeda ride at Perris is like seeing somebody after christmas at the track, brand new everything…all the bells and whistles and yet he is a fat slow guy who thinks he is so funny and tries to make fun of pro racers who dont exactly think fondly of him. Holy smokes, some people must be having a bad day or something! I think Villipoto’s gonna do great but after watching stewart at the Yamaha test track and his no fear-no holds barred attitude towards sx villipoto’s gonna have to charge a bit harder. Fortunately, he’s got some time to improve.

It looks like he’s just along for the ride until there’s a corner and then he has no idea what to do but turn the bike around and go for another ride down the next straight away. GET ON THE REAR BRAKE TO SLIDE THAT BEAST AROUND!!! I’d say forget about what Doug Dube says about being smooth with the throttle and lock up the rear brake going into the corner and literally get on the gas before releasing the brakes. Try skiing on ice out east and then you’ll appreciate sliding the rear end around and lean control.

Wow, he looks very smooth, fast on the 450. As much as I hate to say it, I’d rather see him at the top of the podium than James or Chad. He is a clean cut kid who works very hard. He deserves every bit of success that he has achieved so far.

He definitely looks smooth and precise on the 450. He has amazing throttle control considering his riding style on the 250 was WFO all the time! He has the flat track corners wired, but I think he will have to pick up his speed in the bowl turns if he is going to do better than 3rd. He is a smart/fast rider with Carmichael like determination. I am sure he knows whatever weakness (if any) he has and will work diligently on it until A1.

Guys RV is not as fast a supercross rider as he is motocross. James is gone and so is reed. He may be able to race windham or Millsaps but remember this guys have experience on 450. Josh Hill is another guy to watch.
RV might get a top 5 but im not betting on podium. May be motocross but not SX.

Hey guy’s thought everyone would be happy to see another possible contender on the box. I don’t know about you but I would love to see a three or four way battle in point’s right up to the final round in Vegas. There is one thing to consider here, if the AMA and FIM get there way witch I hope they do the Supercross tracks may go back to the day of old school technical. If that happens then it won’t matter how fast these guy’s are they will have to learn speed control, not just open throttle. I am existed for the new season.

Hey this message is for rv2 and not to reply to any ones comment. I’ve been a fan since you showed up and finished second at your first sx race a few years ago. I know for sure if you can stay on two wheels you will be top 3 all year long. I have watched stewart and reed many times on a sx track and the only thing holding reed back is his whoop speed and his inability to hit the big technical rhythym sections. If you can keep the throttle wide open through the whoops and use the power of the 450 to hit the big technical rhythyms then you will give stewart a run for his money. Good riding rv2

The power to weight ratio is rediculous with RV and his 450! I agree with what people are saying about RV use to being tapped full throttle everywhere, but come on now. The 450 has power EVERYWHERE! As long as RV can carry his usual corner speed having the biked tapped will not matter near as much!

here is a list things i think are funny about peoples comments. first, people who say “he is looking fast” everybody looks fast when they arent racing anybody and the video is slowed down. Second, the people who say he needs to work on his cornering, seriously, no I’m serious, are you serious? how do you know hes losing a tenth of a second on his cornering from this video? c’mon! plus, if you can corner better than him you should be racing him. Third, any comment giving him advice, “he’s gotta go faster” again, are you serious, do you think hes trying to go slow? or just cruising around? c’mon guys.

RV is fast, but remember, its a big step to the 450 class, therefore, he will be getting used to the whole new bike n’all. And you gotta remember that Stewart and Reed have a lot of years of experience, and anything can go wrong. Plus, dont forget, they are the best supercross riders in the world, period.
And for that guy saying that Bubba sucked and that he could never beat Ricky.. just wanted to let you know he just won the outdoor season 24-0, with only one moto with a lead that was less than 10 seconds. Wooops, did i just insinuate somebody took out a 30 second or more lead on the best motocross riders in the world… guess i did.

You the one smoking somthing stewart hasn’t won every outdoor race, he was beat by ricky, k-dub, and reed. he is good but it won’t last forever. right now the feild dosen’t have the depth it did in the past. stwarts good but not as good as rc. when rc was in his prime stewart could never touch him at national. Rc made an impact Immediately when he entered the 250 class or the motorcross class. stwart couldn’t he couldn’t put a season together without getting hurt. I suspect vilopoto won’t be able to beat him right away either neither bubba or rv are as good as the goat. I think if you took out the one rhythm section that usually shows up at every supercross round that seperates the men from the boys, you could throw a blanket over Reed, Stewart and Villopoto. The difference is that the last couple of years, Reed is unwilling to take risks. This is going to be a Stewart and Villy show all year.

I have been riding and spectating since I was 9 years old and though I was never anybody I was respected and I was fast to the local guys, However I do consider myself a Pro Fan or Pro Spectator. I am now 46 and I have seen them all, Ryan V is the best I have ever seen (In My Opinion) He is all heart.

Seriously dude, stop judging people because they live in california i lived there for 5 years and we drove a toyota 4runner and lived in an average house(even though it was overpriced because of the ridiculous cost of living there). If you dont remember, JS was the only rider to give ricky a run for his money, but sure, Ricky was faster, no doubt about that, and when you look at the grand scheme, JS has been pretty unlucky while RC has had a pretty uneventful career (injury and other stuff)

Wow your knowledge of mx is so small, so reed, k-dub, and magrath never gave ricky a run for his money just james. As far as experience he turned pro and stated racing a 15 years old the same age as Rc but couldn’t make an impact in the 250 class right away, because he is simply not as good. Hey dude…just a quick one…bigger bike doesn’t always mean someone is going to go faster…ask the whole field at the 2007 motocross of nations in the US - Villopoto schooled the field on a 250F! I know you’re probably going to say that’s because it was Villopoto, but ask anyone who rides - sometimes it’s harder to go faster on the “bigger” bike. Lets hope its a great battle in 09 anyways…

Hey dude, good point. Although remember last year Reed went into the season with the mentality that he was going to do what it took to win, even if that included going down trying! I think this “new” attitude is a positive thing and it may result in the extra speed Chad needs to contend with Bubba. Throw Villo et. al. into the mix and 09 should be the “perfect storm” take-3!

I never said James is better and that nobody else gave Ricky a run for his money. Its not like hes ridden the way he has his whole life. Im just saying that in the later stages of his career the only rider to stay at the pace of RC was James, and that says a lot. And this year, the only person to ride, even if it was a few laps, at James pace was Alessi, thats not saying James sucks and Alessi is way better.
And then you could say that RC is smarter at riding, but that doesnt save you from everything. Trey Canard is a pretty race savvy racer, but he broke his femur (i believe it was his femur) while lapping some rider, it happens. James blowing his knee in Washougal wasnt something because he sucks at riding or hes too dang stupid for puting his leg out front in the turn, he did it all right, but unfortunantly blew his knee.. it happens.
All n’all im just saying that at this moment, racing wise, James is the fastest out there. Sure Villopoto is fast, but he still hasnt raced on the 450, and not all rider step up to the bike bikes class and make an impact, sure, Villopoto has the talent and skill to do it, but as someone else mentioned, he is having to completely adapt his new riding style to the 450, he rode the 250 how it should be ridden, pinned down, he can do it with the 450, RC learned how, but RC didnt go up to the big class beating the snot out of everybody, its a gradual learning curve. If Villopoto puts in the hours and the dedication as RC did, he will no doubt surpass James, but he has to do it first.. because as i said, James has more experience in the motocross class, and is a force to be handled with.
Soo.. just stating again.. im backing James for being a talented and skilled rider, and at this very moment, is the one to be beaten, i mean, after all he is the one that perfected the scrub.

While watching the racing is always fun, it sure would be more enjoyable if we weren’t sure who was gonna win every time out don’t you agree? Stewart is an amazing rider! I don’t think anyone can seriously deny that. I bet the GOAT would tell you the same thing. Hopefully he will have someone to race against this year when he returns to Supercross. villipoto is the man! i used to live in Poulsbo so he was my hero. I was about 16 out at this sx style outdoor track. and villipoto was still on 80’s then. i remember i was showin my gf how i could “cream everyone at the track.” here comes this little 80 just screamin along.. and he passed me. i was killin it too. he passed everyone out there. i wasn’t a fan of him on that particular day. lol. but RV you’re a beast man!
