After last week’s dramatic turn of events at round one in Anaheim, California, where series favorites Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Chad Reed and San Manuel Band of Mission Indians/Yamaha’s James Stewart came together in the whoops, crashing and effectively ending a chance either one had at winning the race, the two heavy hitters looked towards round two inside the confines of Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, as a new beginning. Be that as it may, though, JGR/Yamaha’s rookie 450 racer—and round one winner—Josh Grant tasted victory and wanted more. When the gate hit the dirt for the start of the night’s main event, however, things turned out exactly how Stewart and Reed had hoped—both were up front, battling dramatically until the end with Stewart taking the victory by the skin of his teeth over rival Reed.

In the Lites class, first round winner Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer was looking to continue the momentum he had, however, after taking the holeshot and leading for the first third of the race, a costly mistake in the sand section cost him the race. The bobble allowed Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey to take over first, and with it his first win of the season.

LITES QUALIFYING

Brayton took second in his heat race.

The first race of the night saw Troy Lee Designs/Honda’s Chris Blose jump out to the early lead followed closely by Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer. After only a few laps, though, Weimer managed to take over first and pull away. Behind the top two, Geico Powersports/Honda’s Dan Reardon, MDK/KTM’s Ryan Sipes, and Brawndo/Honda’s Ryan Clark battled for third. When the checkered flag waved, though, Weimer cruised in for the win followed by Blose, Reardon, Sipes, and Clark.

The second heat of the night had the potential to be action packed as rivals Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey and Boost Mobile/AM/PM/Monster’s Jason Lawrence were both on the line. As it turned out, though, the battle never materialized—Lawrence crashed early on and was never a factor in the short qualifier. Dungey on the other hand quickly worked his way into the lead and checked out. Finishing behind the Suzuki rider was MDK/KTM’s Justin Brayton with privateer Honda-mounted Eric McCrumman taking third.

The LCQ was relatively uneventful, as DNA Energy/Butler Brothers/Honda’s Shaun Skinner led from start to finish. It is worth noting, however, that both Jason Lawrence and Geico Powersports/Honda’s Trey Canard failed to qualify. Lawrence suffered from a poor start and could not slice his way through the pack in time, while Canard crashed.

I really liked to see when stewart and reed were able to congratulate each other after the race. It looks like it could of gone either way for the win quite easy when you look at the average lap times. its going to be a great season

  • michael cantu Says:

just to let transworld know, james is on a yamaha. they said kaw in the results. im sure its just a read-over error

  • jean-guy rubberboot Says:

… and Chad Reed is on a Suzuki, not Yamaha as they posted in the results also

  • Anonymous Says:

and reedy is on a suzuki not a yamaha

  • johnny Says:

Josh Grant is the real deal! So exciting to see a rookie come out swingin’! I hope he can keep it going.

  • Suzuki MX Says:

See Jason Lawrence really does suck! He must have smoked one too many doobies before he went out to race last nite… and forgot he had to qualify! He just wishes he was as good as Dungey, thats why he talks so much trash…… Go # 10…

  • Anonymous Says:

I love it how Grant is kickin it as a rookie and Villipoto is doing average at best. All that hype and he hasn’t delivered. No hype for Grant and he has the points lead.

  • Lawless Says:

That is really a shame that J-Law had to watch the main from the bench. I am sure that he really enjoyed watching Dungey win and put him down 29 points. Maybe he should do another interview on TWMX and talk about how much anger he has about it. Maybe that would help him make the main.

  • harold Says:

i think j-law has diarrhea of the mouth i think he needs some pepto. your doing you and yamaha bad shut up and prove yourself.

  • Stee-J Says:

Wow, after an average lites career Grant is stickin’ it to the man in the 450’s. I guess it was just his bike. But look at fourth, Ivan must have trained really hard this offseason to beat both of his more hyped teammates and Kdub who I think is off the pace compared to his stablemates. I believe that he (IT9) could win if the right situation presents itself.

  • CRrider94 Says:

josh grant is doing great, i wish that speedtv would show that same special that they had that was live and showed everything

  • J-Bone Says:

BORING! Stewart jumps out to the lead and pulls a gap, except for Reed….what a SHOCKER! First of all, Congrats again to Josh Grant - good job and big ups to you. This is not helping the sport, so let’s hope things go back to the way A1 worked it and was exciting, interesting, and great for the GROWTH Of the sport.
Second, J-Felon, J-Convict, J-A$$munch doesn’t make the main. HOW IS THAT possible? What an idiot this kid is! Good for you Dungey - maybe nice guys don’t finish last in this world after all.

I love everyone bashing L-law but not one word from all you j-haters about trey canard not making the main either. the two 08 champs not making the main at the same race, now thats a story.

  • Andimers Says:

Poor performance from J-Law and Canard looking at the results, I’ll have to see the race to see what really happened though, or was it just bad racing?

  • astars Says:

    great pics as usual,thanks

  • murph783 Says:

Definitely pumped to see grant do well again this week, good for him, he’s been one of my favorite riders since he went pro.

Lawrence on the other hand, I’m still a huge fan, but come on man.

  • murph783 Says:

both fell in their heat races, canard fell in the LCQ as well, while j-law just got a shitty start and didn’t make it

  • Stephen122193 Says:

    Thats wat i said

  • Stephen122193 Says:

Who was talking about canard everyone is talking about how lawerence swears he’s raw but ends up sucking…so mabye you should hop off his nuts

  • Chris Says:

Thank you. Got ‘em changed. Im sure Lutes was up until the wee hours of the night. A typo is bound to happen at 3 in the morning. :)

  • Anonymous Says:

anyone paying any attention to chris blose? Coming out of no where holding down fifth in points..with 2 top 5 finishes…thats impressive

  • Anonymous' Mom Says:

Trey had a DNF in his heat and a DNS in the LCQ. Something probably happened to him or his bike. Lawernce had like a 15th or 19th in his heat and a 8th in the LCQ. THAT is why nobody is talking smack on Canard, and Lawrence reamains to be the inconsistent “angry” loser he always has been.

  • throttlewideopen Says:

man j-law needs to step up his game! good job to bubba and reedy!

  • cookie311 Says:

lawrence is the biggest smack talker out there

  • kdubfan Says:

what’s up with villopoto? He sucks

  • ty53ler Says:

rumor has it he broke or sprained his wrist. i didnt know riding with an injury makes you a terrible rider.

  • Michael Cantu Says:

I believe that everyone reading this would agree that Jason Lawrence is a very talented rider. His championship last year speaks for itself. As for how he presents himself, i feel that Dungey was correct as to saying that what Jason does off the track isn’t professional. If he woud quit smack talking everybody and just let his riding do the talking,he would get much more respect. He must feel pretty humbled afer not qualifying for the main and watching Dungey put a whopping 29 points on him.

  • Brendan Lutes Says:

Haha… Oh man, thanks for catching that. I was up until 3 in the morning doing this and could barely see what I was typing in front of me. I guess I’m still not used to seeing those two guys on different teams now. That’s almost as bad as when Ralph Shaheen (sp?) said “James Reed is riding really well,” when talking about Stewart on Speed…

  • Anonymous Says:

j law smokes pole. nuthin but a moto bro

  • Anonymous Says:

    Dungey for president!!

  • Anonymous Says:

Villopoto is gonna be more and more solid as the season goes on. Heard from a reliable source that he rode with a broken femur last night.

  • spellman481 Says:

Everyone talks trash about J-Law but he runs a #1 plate for a reason. Hes fast. Canard didnt make the main either. Riders have bad days. Even Stewart and Dungey. I guess you would have to ride to know that. Go J-law. He will be back to kick ass again.

  • JG Says:

A broken femur??? I don’t think so, there is no way possible for him to even move if that bone is broken. How did he break it if thats the case???

  • JG Says:

I’ve always been a reed fan because he rode Yamaha, but I’m still rooting for him on the yellow, but stewart was always faster than him, hands down. I’m am very impressed with reeds performance last night, I attended the race here in Phoenix and I would say that reed was actually faster then stewart in a few sections of the track, esp the whoops. Its going to be an interesting season!

  • G-Money Says:

You gotta give it up to Chris Blose. The guy came out and put in two top 5 finishes against the factory guys. He’s just going to get better and better I think, and if he keeps up the good rides I’m sure only good things will happen. Chad Reed has really stepped up his game. I was at Phoenix and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was a great race and i think CR has got some wins in him this season. I’m just glad it’s not gonna be another Bubba runaway series.

  • Anonymous Says:

what a shame that J-law didn’t make it, I don’t think that j-law is the best guy in town, but he is really fast and it’s much better to see him fight with dungey in the track. In fact dungey should win the championship, cause he is a fair player, but men, if j-law wins again… he will have kicked everyone’s ass. Keep an eye on wiemer, he’s come for win or nothing tis season in SX.

    From Spain!

  • Andimers Says:

If he was as amazing as his fans seems to say he is, he wouldn’t break/sprain his wrist.

  • Andimers Says:

He crashed in the Main on Anaheim aswell, and still rode up to 4th.

  • Thor Says:

    A broken femur, yeah right… I don`t think so!

  • J-Bone Says:

WHY or HOW do these guys KEEP allowing Stewart to get either the hole shot or under them in the first turn??? YOU CAN’T LET him keep doing this or he is gone and so is the excitement and growth of the sport. The guy is the fastest there is, but the start is the one place you can shut him down - stop being a bunch of kitty cats and park him in the turn or something! BORING!

  • Anonymous Says:

  • Anonymous Says:

he wouldn’t break his wrist if he was amazing? what are you going on about so james stewart wouldn’t bung his knee if he was amazing?

  • Anonymous Says:

Did you even watch the race JBone? It was not a boring race, Reed was on Bubbas back wheel for several finishing laps. Any mistake and Reed would’ve taken over and the win, they both rode with amazing precision and speed.

  • Grinson Says:

Wicked awesome for Grant, but im really wanting to see Stewart catch up so we can get a more ‘off the chair’ experience this year!!

I did read that Grant exceled on the big bike, so its understandable, plus he already had experience racing on a 450 beforehand, but I do hope Villopoto gathers it up and can mix it with the top guys.

  • Grinson Says:

Oh, and I hope Brayton wins the championship!!

That would be wicked awesome, see a KTM rider winning, and against ‘all odd’, because I mean, that guy’s got talent!!

  • ANONYMOUS Says:

Jason will get it together don’t worry!…Oh no he didn’t make the main and now he is 29 point’s down so what he was 36 point’s down last year and came back and smoked everybody’s ass it’s only the second race and your already counting him out?….Jason Lawrence 2009 West Coast Lites Supercross Champion #1w

  • Michael Berg Says:

    bobe

  • dgizzy Says:

Reed was the fastest guy on the truck. If he had the hole shot he would win. Bubba is lucky coming out of phoenix.

  • Rob Says:

    Note to Speed Channel:

    1. Please have your hosts (Ralph and Jeff) show some respect for each other and viewers by not talking over each other all the time. It’s more than ridiculous! I had to turn of the sound to keep for losing my mind!

    2. Have a meeting with your camera and production people to realize once you place the track position banner at the top of the screen you’re cutting of the riders heads when tracking them over jumps and some other obstacles. This same problem also makes the onboard (helmet Camera) worthless footage. All we see is the ground.

If this sport wants to go mainstream, we need to do a better job. I know the augments, Jeff and Ralph get excited…Its hard to get the right camera angles. Come on! They are paid professionals…do your job or let some else do it, that has the passion to do it rite.

As fans we are asked to pay for expensive satellite or cable fees to watch and now have to pay to listen to webcasts. So I don’t think quality coverage is a lot to ask for.

  • JG Says:

I agree. The track wasn’t the best for passing, otherwise I think reed would have passed james. Also, if grant would have not held up reed the first couple of laps and just moved over for him, I think it would have been more interesting. Grant just needs to try to follow these guys to see how they go so fast.

  • onthepipe719 Says:

Oh yea… real lucky smart one. thats y bubba has been spankin his ass 4 years dumbass… you think stewart didnt have ne more in him??? and imagine if he had his bike setup perfect and could actually make it through the whoops like he normally can. then what? smart guy

  • COONDOG 127 Says:

Kick azz to see Brayton doing well, he is from here in Iowa. He is really a stand up dude. Is anyone else pissed about SPEED comming back from commercial and Reed had already made the pass on Ryan V! Come on SPEED, kudos for showing the lites and big bikes back to back but I think they have a Nascar goon editing this stuff!

  • azboy Says:

lmao bunch of tards first off the 450s were sick great battles the 250s… weimer was doing awesome dungey capitalized on a few mistakes so props to him morris and braton but damn the ol number 63 was haulin and to say the truth canard got a concussion and wasnt allowed to ride however he looked awesome in practice and as for j law he looked good as well. hate the kid as a champion but hes a hell of a rider! but very impressive in both classes as for myself i must say brayton and blose were a huge shock and pleasure to watch keep up the good work guys should be an awesome season and by the way RV did not have a broken femur give me a break!

I thought Dungey was riding for One Ind. When and why did he make the switch to Fox?

  • Andimers Says:

I said as amazing as his fans say he is.

I am a Dungey fan, he is a great rider, but makes a lot of mistakes. He’s not amazing.

  • Andimers Says:

Yes, but he finished 4th and got a penalty. :)

  • Andimers Says:

    Are you for real?

Because Stewart’s been beating him the last seasons, means that Reed will never catch up with him?

And read James interview on RacerX, he admits that Reed was faster than him trough the whoops and everything. They’re both great riders and it’s going to be a thrilling season.

  • Anonymous Says:

Wow I never knew that going out and at least trying to qualify was worse than just giving up. That’s funny!!

  • Anonymous Says:

He made the switch on Thursday last week if i am not mistaken. He made the switch because he is a baby back bitch!!!

  • KX250F35 Says:

i think bubba riding a yami this year slowed him down and reed on the suzuki made him faster making for close battles between the two. wiithout the bike changes of this year (bubba still on a kawi and reed on yamaha) i feel like bubba would dominate. reed looks great on the suzuki and bubba not so good on yamaha. kinda makes it obvious yamahas are maybe the worst manufacture out there. also last to fuel inject. maybe they put to much money into paying their head riders instead of development for the bike.

  • Anonymous Says:

Making the switch to Fox doesn’t say anything bad about who Dungey is and how he rides. Also, if I’m remembering right, J-LAW DIDN’T EVEN MAKE THE MAIN!! He might be last years champ, but atleast Dungey can make it to the main, and win it.

  • SXMXfan Says:

I’ve seen the same thing for two weekends in a row now…Timmy “Red Dog” Ferry is running SixSixOne boots spray painted black so as to make it harder to see the logos from a distance. He ran the Scott Genius in practice at A1 if I remember correctly, but by the heat races he was “Back in Black” with SixSixOne. There is no hiding it in close up shots(Photo 10 of 13 in the second gallery on this page). What is going on with this, can you shed some light on it for us TWMX? He is sponsored by Scott and should be wearing the Scott Genius boot. On another note I couldn’t help but have a slight case of déjà vu when watching the 450 main. Stewart and Reed run away from everyone and lap up to somewhere around seventh place(correct me if I’m wrong). It undoubtedly shows that they have astounding speed but I can’t help but being bored with it. Maybe SPEED should focus a little less on James “Bubba Scrubba” Stewart and Chad “The Thunder from Down Under” Reed and more on the racing that’s taking place behind them, which I hate to say it but sometimes is more interesting than a two man runaway.

  • SXMXfan Says:

    P.S.
Is the lites class champions curse seen at the U.S. Open from not so long ago back? It seems as though J-law and Treynard are running into some bad luck so far, lets hope that it doesn’t keep up and we are in for some racing of epic proportions!

  • wis321 Says:

    reed squats to pee

  • SX-MX fan Says:

    P.S.
Josh Grant is here to stay! Maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself saying it but with consistent showings so far and even a holeshot to his credit (what happened to Milsaps or the “Holeshot Master” Mike Alessi as Villopoto jokingly referred to him during his post race interview with Erin Bates) it seems as though number 33 from the JGRMX camp means business. Is the lites class champions curse seen at the East West Shootout not so long ago back? It seems as though the new King of Goon Trey Canard and the always interesting J-law can’t catch a break. Let’s hope this isn’t anything like the curse of the bambino and it wears off soon so we can see some epic racing in the lites class!

  • arizonarider Says:

As far as the Stewart/Reed show goes, they should just make a second row at the start for them and make them work through the pack. RV should be running thier pace and Grant, while I am a fan, just isn’t as fast. He got lucky with the win at A1, I’m sure even he would admit.
I liked Josh Hill’s “oops, I didnt’ see ya” block on Reed though!

  • yo momma Says:

  • Tom Says:

    Yo momma,
Yeah, except for that RED NUMBER ONE PLATE.
Imagine how fast he’d be if he wasn’t a stoner!

  • Anonymous Says:

Yep, Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door so RV should automatically be killing everyone on the 450s. It’s evident that half of the squids on here don’t have a clue about riding. Villopoto can’t ride the 450 with the same style he rode the 250,… off the back pinned bouncing off of anything in his way. And since when is a 6th or 7th or whatever he’s finished a bad finish? Give it time and RV will be killing everyone as he did on the 250. Or, if that doesn’t work maybe he’ll just get back on the 250 and roost all the big boys on the pee wee. I’d love to see that.

  • Anonymous Says:

Hell Yeah J-Law all the way 08 and 09 Lites champ

  • J Says:

I bleed blue and go for anyone riding yamaha(including lawerance unfortinally), and I really dont think that stewart is liking his bike

  • Brendan Says:

J-Law stands for something that we all need in the sport. The AMA has been just a huge church parent to the sport, yeah, family is what drives it in the behginning. But people like larence ride for the pure fun of it and his personality is a statement that we can’t take all these retarded rules that will eventually be set forth. Dungey is the shit too, noting against him. Oh and by the way, s*** for brains, smoking a doobie? If you ever seen real facts, alcohol is more harmful and fatal to a human-being. How did that rumor even start he smoked that? Brian Deegan paved the way, and if we keep bending over a barrel for the AMA, this sport will go nothing but downhill, and our bikes will so choked up they wont run. I’m tired of this great sport not being thrown into the main stream. The ama avoids it time and time again. We should be prime time.

To the retard that posted it: Ryan Villipoto is probably the fastest motorcycle rider in the world. I realize that it’s impossible for your limited powers of comprehension to process more than 2 variables so let me enlighten you. Standing 6th in points after your first 2 races in the Supercross class is not grounds for immasculation; neither is being the 3rd fastest qualifier. At 11 years old and 85lbs I watched that kid scrub a 600lb yz400f so hard you would have shat yourself. At that point the kid probably didn’t have enough testosterone to grow a single curly hair but he could hold more mud then you’ll ever be able to. I can’t fathom what kind of turd would make unfounded public statements about a kid’s genitals but I do know that if your claims are true then his one nut is, by volume, 10 times the size of those pathetic things that are camping out between your hairless legs. Now stop playing with computers and go back to hind teet where you belong.
