“Wait? How much oil do I need?’ That’s a frequent question we all ask ourselves when we’re changing our engine oil. Typically, changing our oil is something we take care of every three to six rides (hopefully), but often forget how much is necessary when we actually put forth our oil changing endeavors. Thankfully, though, you have TransWorld Motocross to help you fill in the blanks when you’re in doubt. We’ve put together all the information you need to know when you’re changing the oil in your thumper.

You did not list the frequency of oil changes for the Yamahas
January 22nd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Ya and wheres the stats for the Yamaha 2strokes??? Some people still ride them…no offense four strokes are great but it would be nice for some of the 2stroke numbers as well
January 22nd, 2009 at 7:39 pm
its a 2 stroke.most basic machine ever, probable says on the clutch cover, look in the owners manual you dumb f!@$…figure it out
January 22nd, 2009 at 7:56 pm
yeah i agree with mxdogg255 i have a ktm 125 2-stroke and i already konw what amount of oil and stuff ..but some people don´t
you can´t discriminate 2-stroke motorcycles that way
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:23 pm
hey this is great!!!!!! Man u guys r always looking out for the mini riders.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:43 pm
hey guys also incase you dont know there is a bolt on crankcase that you open and when oil drips out of it you know it is full i mean the required amount. I have a 4 stroke and 2 stroke and it works on all mx bikes. It is also on the manual. This eliminates the need of measuring darn math.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:49 pm
1.05 mL might not be enough for the yamaha 250f. However, 1.05 L might work.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm
its L not ml
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:49 am
Discrimination on 2-strokes??
Considering the title of this article is called “How Much Oil Does My Four-Stroke Take?” im not surprised there isn’t any info an 2-strokes.
January 23rd, 2009 at 4:43 am
The 2009 KX250F must be wrong. The manual says 1 L
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:53 am
More than 2strokes and ur a wanker….
January 23rd, 2009 at 6:49 am
The 09 KXF’s are wrong! It’s L, not ML.
January 23rd, 2009 at 8:59 am
The Manual is wrong also it says .8ml when you change the oil…if you look at the view glass it does not fill till 1ml
January 23rd, 2009 at 9:35 am
Simple Mistake guys, I’m sure he’ll change it once he gets into the office.
January 23rd, 2009 at 9:39 am
Hey moron…..did you read the subject of this article? It says HOW MUCH OIL DOES MY 4 STROKE TAKE I don’t see anywhere that they mention 2 strokes hence the name 4 stroke. This article has nothing to do with 2 strokes get over it.
And that bolt on the crancase for overflow is 75% of the time wrong plus the honda’s have the check bolt in the wrong location so if you were to use it you would be putting in not enough oil. Just measure it with a raitio rite and you can’t go wrong those check bolts are not accurate at all even on the other bikes because oil is so thick it can give false readings
January 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 am
How about a ‘06 CRF250R? I really need help with this one? Anyone?
January 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 am
Where’s the info for the tranny oil’s? That is a four stroke oil.
January 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 am
Thats funny.. mL instead of L?! I could have sworn the guys from transworld MX ride dirtbikes and at least change thier own oil?!
Side Note: The way Honda’s change their oil is lame as hell. Probably the reason you never see them winning any races….
January 23rd, 2009 at 11:54 am
I like the motorex oil bottles…they have measurement indicaters right on the bottle. Other brands may as well…but I rdie KTM
January 23rd, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Sorry for the typo everybody! However, in regards to the Suzuki, they are in fact measured by milliliters.
Again, my apologies.
January 23rd, 2009 at 12:41 pm
i agree dont go flaring about how there arent two stroke numbers when the article title clearly states that its for four strokes. people need to stop being so damn sped. im sure the case on your PW50 says how much oil it needs
quit complaining thanks
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:01 pm
2009 Honda CRF450R
Oil change: 650-680ml
With filter change: 600ml.
this must be wrong??? it usually fills more when changing oil filter??
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:06 pm
got a manual? or google?
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
YOU YZ F#GS ARE ALL THE SAME!
January 23rd, 2009 at 3:01 pm
i have a 250f and i change the oil like every 4 - 8 hour if
January 23rd, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Just buy a Billy Who Man Funnel…. Super easy….
January 23rd, 2009 at 4:12 pm
ml and l are the same just divide or multiply by 1000, move the decimal 3 places. 1000ml = 1l check your manuals. i always change fill, then check qty by the procedure in the manual, sightglass, checkbolt, dipstick. only bike ive found that doesnt have a way to check is yz85.
January 23rd, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Never trust the little oil window on your KX450 either, it’s an all or nothing deal…….
January 23rd, 2009 at 4:43 pm
this is lame. not everyone rides a 2009 bike. I ride an 05 cfr250, where is the info for that? how about 06’s, 08’s, this is totally useless. nice job twmx.
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Thats why you have manuals, JA.
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:27 pm
NEVER TRUST THE CHECK BOLT! ALWAYS GO BY THE MANUAL…
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
ARE YOU KIDDING! what does that statement even mean.LOLOLOLO!
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:36 pm
You guy say 1.05 for yamaha, thanks and all but I can get that out of my manual. Tell me what that is in a ratio rite, plus its in ML on the oil bottle and CCs on the ratio rite( or vice versa ) Also, whats the difference between CCs and MLs?
January 23rd, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Put in what the manual says
January 23rd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
some people can’t spell correctly, some others can’t even read!!
January 23rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
There are several converters online if you Google CC to MM. I keep a dry erase board on the wall in my shop to post how much oil, and when I last changed it. Conversion of liters to quarts is almost identical. Just slightly more in a quart (1.05L = 1.11Q). Hope this helps!
January 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 pm
I would have never figured the Hondas use so much less oil than their competitors.
Did I hear a new thread? “How to rebuild and do everything else to a 2-stroke for less than $1000?”
January 24th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Honda 250’s 2004-2008 and 450’s 2002-2008 - Put 700ml in the engine side and 750ml in tranny with or without filter change. You will be good to go! If you learned this here though, you are an idiot and will probably jack your bike up anyhow. cheers
January 24th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
for this topic!
January 24th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
A cc(cubic centimeter) and 1 ml(millileter) are the same thing
January 24th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
I think you all should think first before you reply something stupid. If you dont know how much oil your bike takes, you should’nt have a bike. Keep your retarded comments to yourself!!!
January 25th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Try reading the title of this how to. It sais “How much oil does my FOUR STROKE take.”
February 1st, 2009 at 4:05 pm

February 10th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
wow you all sound like bi@#$’s all tranworld is trying to do is help you so you dont have to look in your manual all the time. shut up and take the advice, dont complain. 1ML=1CC by the way i am a senior in high school and i know that. i am not trying tosound mean but dang
February 11th, 2009 at 12:05 am
hey elmo what about the 2006 yz250f same amount as the 2009?
February 14th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I think the 2009 kx 250f numbers are wrong, my manual has it as .75 L without a filter change/removal, .8 L with a filter change/removal, and 1 L from entirely dry. Not sure, just thought i’d point it out
February 17th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Rotella-T in both side. Have been running it same bikes 2 yrs and no issues (bikes are modded w/ JE HC piston, PC Porting @ Ti Valves and PC Cam w/ U4.2) Change both side ever 2 rides and filter every 3 and in regards to the oil for the CRF’s this is correct…and yes change it often. You are foolish to run the same oil no matter what kind more than 4-5 rides!
19oz w/o filter change
21oz w/filter change.
The amounts are a little less than OEM recommends. (there is no need for the crank to be sloughing around in to much oil.)

February 23rd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Thanks for that, alot of people overfill their oil, which as you know definately isn’t good for the engine!
February 25th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
ur a cocker f***er aren’t you??
February 25th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Shut up Pu**y.
February 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
This is almost useless. Its almost 2009 models and most people dont ride brand new bikes.
March 3rd, 2009 at 11:37 pm
hey how much oil should i put in my kornhole
March 4th, 2009 at 12:59 am
Well, Very interesting topic… I will tell my friend and they will like this. Thanks…
March 4th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
just keep adding oil until it comes out of the oil filler cap,and then you should be alright. TWMX rules
March 9th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
How about 2-stroke bikes? Taking into account the fact that engine gets fresh oil with fuel, how often should we change oil in gearbox?
March 19th, 2009 at 9:33 am
what about a 2005 crf 250?
April 10th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Hey guys my dog literally ate my 2 fiddy manual how much do you put in a 2006 ktm 250 sxf oil fliter removed I cant remember!!!!!!!!!!
April 26th, 2009 at 3:55 am
I think that we should al get together and hold down THEGOAT while I pour oil down his throat until he spews blood from every hole.
April 26th, 2009 at 4:09 am
ok now isacc first remove the corpse of the suffocated kitten from your rectum. Then add one quart of ams oil and things should run smoother.
April 26th, 2009 at 4:18 am

July 1st, 2009 at 1:36 am
how about a 2001 yamaha wr 426 how much oil does it take ?
August 2nd, 2009 at 9:35 pm
How can you guys say that without a oil filter change on the kx250f you need to put more oil than with a oil filter change. If you guys look at your kx250f test you say ''Engine oil as been decreased from 1.5 liters to 1.0 liter (wich reduces weight and mechanical loss). Can i get some explications please? Thank you
August 21st, 2009 at 10:58 pm
You guys need to quit bitching at twmx and just buy a damn manual, Sheesh. You oughtta know how to change you're oil by now anyway.
September 22nd, 2009 at 6:47 pm
fuk u the manual is 100$ and more!!!
October 14th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
The manual says to warm up the bike and then check. If you do this it will check full with 800ml.
November 2nd, 2009 at 4:44 pm
that info for the 09 Kx250f is wrong.. the correct amount is .75 liters not 1.4 liters. The 07-08 models took 1.4 liters but kawasaki reduced the amount for 2009! Hope no one over filled there bike due to this information given in this report.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm
hahahahahaa discriminate against 2 strokes like theyre a race. ahhahahahhaaa
