Podium Pie With Chad Reed

As the defending champion, Chad Reed wants very badly to defend his hard earned title. After Salt Lake City, however, the Australian currently sits second in points behind James Stewart who now has a six point lead. Following the dramatic main event inside Rice-Eccles stadium in Salt Lake City, we caught up with him to find out his thoughts on the race and what his plans are for Vegas next week.

You started off the main in fine form…

Yeah, I got an awesome start. I holeshot both my heat and the main event. I just tried to control it. I wanted to get down on the inside and lead the way. I don’t know if you can tell, but I have been working my butt off on my starts. I have been practicing lots of them. I also try to watch Mikey (Alessi) and see what he does. We made a lot of changes to the bike to make getting off the line easier for me, and it has made a big difference. So in the main, I got the holeshot and lead early on. James got by me and I passed him right back, but he got back by again. So I just looked at the lap counter and figured that I could wait a bit and follow, and I liked what I was seeing. I stayed close easily enough, but unfortunately I had a get together with Chisolm and just lost touch with James. He is obviously riding really well and it is hard to catch back up if he does get away.

What exactly happened between you and Kyle Chisolm out there?

I mean, he just totally came in there and tried to spin my ass out. But you know, if that’s the way they want to play the game… It kind of sucks, you know, but it is what it is. I’d much rather just settle things between just me and James, you know? I’m just gonna keep working and try to make things happen for me next weekend. Karma has a way of biting people in the ass, so you never know.

How much more aggressive was the riding tonight?

It’s hard to compare it, really. The way the Internet is, I don’t know. I don’t want to comment on it. It is what it is. I felt closer than I have been all year long tonight, you know? In the middle to end of the season I have made great strides and it is nice to see some improvement. What’s done is done though, and I can only look forward.

There’s been talk of you being ill. Can you elaborate on that?

Yeah, I don’t really care to comment on it. I mean, I visibly sit here fifteen pounds lighter than I was a month ago. I mean, I have a great doctor  and we are getting better. I was strong throughout the main event and that’s what matters, and it’s a great time to be that strong – in the second-to-last round.

You did look much better than you did in Seattle…

Last week was a hard thing, for sure. Not everybody knows the whole story. I knocked myself out the Wednesday before Seattle, plus I wasn’t really feeling that great. And then I made it really difficult on myself by falling in the first turn. But that’s why we race 17 races for the championship – you have to get out there and put yourself in a good position at every race, be as strong as you can be, and last week I didn’t do that.

What are your thoughts about next weekend’s Las Vegas series finale?

It’s going to be a good one. It’s going to be interesting, you know?  I want to get out front and ride strong. I am going to do everything in my power to win this title. Whatever it takes: I will do it. Hopefully, we will have a yellow #800 in the race, as well.

  • wanna kno Says:

hey chad, really im not out there racing with you guys so sometimes, I DONT KNOW!!!!! haha jk good luck!! go to vegas with GUNS-A-BLAZIN!!!!!

  • vegasbaby.. Says:

you know thats what sucks about chad reed. he will “do anything” to win. so he will go in and side swipe stewart, then when something happens to him, he whines and crys. i mean, what chisolm did was cheap, but i believe james had nothing to do with it. so hopefully alessi will keep his mind an just ride normal an leave it to the two contenders

  • bonehead Says:

vegasbaby…your exactly right…’it is what it is’, he’s looking for the take-out because he can’t beat James straight up.
James passed him cleanly twice and Chad cracks…tries to send James to the sidelines. Weak as hell Chad, just plain weak.
I hope Stewart puts it too you next week…fair and square..again.

  • Anonymous Says:

he was giving stewart a run and when stewart couldnt pull away what happens… in comes chisholm with a cheap shot.

  • Jarrett Dean Says:

WHY does he keep saying Alessi is a good teammate? Alessi has lAYED up for Stewart like the complete WUSS he is like 4 or 5 times that I have seen this season? He lets him by and does NOTHING! You better have a gameplan or pray alot before Vegas Chad!

  • Jarrett Dean Says:

Alessi BETTER help his teammate for once! And to be a factory rider and NOT make the main in Utah? Pathetic Alessi!

  • T Says:

Who won more races this year? Stewart doesn’t need help from anyone to beat Reed. Like Stewart said…he had no idea what even happened between them.

  • free338 Says:

dude i bet u cant even make in to the main lol what bout when rv didnt make in to the main is he pathetic do u forget that alessi was leadin almost the whole race last week and he is always atleast top 5 dude

  • Anonymous Says:

would be nice if dungey can mix it up as well!! ever thought of that. I mean, he did win the west lite title already its gonna get nasty

  • Anonymous Says:

would be nice if dungey gets into the mix of things as well, karma is the shit… good luck reed.

  • free338 Says:

yea i bet he didnt have anything to do with it lol anyone can i had nothin to do with it even though u know he did dude alessi was on larry brooks team when he took ivan out a couple years back in the outdoor’s so u tell me he had no idea

  • CB Says:

what chisholm did was no cheaper than what reed was attempting on stewart, and face it unless reed full on t-boned him the race was over either way.

  • Sellers Says:

Some of you people on here are so naive. You have your favorite rider and you defend them to the end, which is fine. But when it blinds you from the fact of what went down on the track its ridiculous, Reed and Stewart were battling hard, its a contact sport and when you are riding side by side its inevitable. But bar to bar action is totally different than a lapper intentionally taking someone out. He clearly pulls up for Stewart to pass by and then guns it after reed passes. Its really clear as day. As for Vegas, i don’t necessarily want Alessi to take James out but it would be understandable. I would rather have karma do its job.

  • SG Says:

Don’t kid yourselfs James would push Chad in the berm if that is what he had to do to win. I recall the GOAT himself saying in Jax how James was trying to take out Chad. It definitly is not one sided.

  • SXChic422 Says:

You JS fans need to watch the replay of the race! There’s no way in hell Reed attempted to take JS out! That was merely racing! Just like last season with TC and RV. love tap! I sure didn’t see Reed get the BLACK FLAG! And pulled out of the race!! JS is a looser, scared little girl who has to hide behind his band of Thugs! That will be the only way we’ll even come close to winning this season! “Looser” sums Stewart up in one word! Go Reed Go!!!!

  • Stee-J Says:

Alessi has been top five like twice this year “dude”. O and “dude” Villopoto didn’t make the main because he had mono “dude”. Ok “dude”. Alessi sucks “dude”. So “dude” just leave Villopoto out of this “dude”. He just won the main invent becuase someone by the name of Alessi couldn’t handle RV2’s pressure and dumped in the turns!

  • Stee-J Says:

Last time I checked your “loser” (that is how you actually spell the word) was ahead of your man Chad in the points by 6, and your “loser” also has 8 more wins than Chad. I mean, you are totally right, James Stewart is horrible, he should retire because of how bad he sucks. I bet SXChic422 could destroy him. James probably couldn’t even beat David Pingree (and Pingree would crash and break his wrist on the second to last lap and still beat James).

  • sd1904 Says:

reed is a cry baby, he is always making excuses.reed has attemted to take JS out plenty of times.CR can not beat JS straight up,the only one that beat JS straight, and put on good shows was RC..

  • lodown Says:

I couldn’t agree more. Reed not only looks to pull dirty moves, he TALKS ABOUT IT! Come on people, seriously. Do any of you ride? race? wtf… stewart is absolutely faster. period. if he stands reed up in corners, it’s either to prove a point or b/c he doesn’t want to be taken out. Reed does it b/c he’s pissed and wants to take Stewart down b/c why? that’s right folks, say it with me altogether now… ‘HE’S NOT AS FAST.’ There… was that hard? Reed is amazingly consistent, and an incredible rider. That’s not my argument. But he’s definitely not the fastest man on the track, and he is just as dirty as anyone else out there. As for chisholm, well, he’s an absolute idiot. Do I think he did it on purpose? Who knows. I think he intended to bump him for sure, but I don’t think he’s smart enough to know if he skipped of that tabletop he wouldn’t have enough room to brake in time to turn and still try and interfere with Reed. In over his head and stupid move if you ask me. Stewart definitely doesn’t need that to win - how many times does he have to win to prove that? 11 in one season is enough for me… Chishom, idiot. Reed, fast but completely disrespectful and immature. Stewart, fastest racer on the planet when RC isn’t on the track and healthy. Hopefully Vegas will be a clean race - the fans deserve it….

  • Christian Says:

why all the haters…??? i mean this has been a great season…

  • Kyle Chisolm Says:

hey, uh…whats all the fuss….my throttle stuck?

  • annoy Says:

the seasons great, the riders are great, its just chad reeds fans totally SUCK

  • Chad Reed Says:

at least I have fans wuss….

  • Max Says:

Typical Chad reed, making excuses like a whiny little baby. Yeah what Chisholm did was lame but it hardly affected Chad. Bubba just owns him every time they race straight up and he cant admit it.

  • Anonymous Says:

for a championship i think rough racing is fair only between the 2 out front. and reed isnt mad at stewart because hes faster. reeds mad at stewart for all the times hed bump reed out of the way in 07. now that reed is just as fast as him, he wants to do it back. stewart has been took out half the field in daytona, i wouldnt mind making a rough pass on someone who pushed me around in 07, landed on my last conpetion, took out mcgrath in A3 06 and hurt my teammate. taking stewart out is wrong, but… happens during racing…so?

  • mxguy53 Says:

Good Job Kyle…Whatever happened…happened…Nobody really knows but you…I just hope they really dont ban you from racing vegas.. I mean what would people say if another rider did the same thing..Theres always someone there going to blame for there bad luck..A true champion doesnt complain….Take note Chad..

  • Anonymous Says:

Chad Reed is what he is…A second place rider. Always has been and always will be. Both of his championships have been in years when the number one rider in the series was out for the season and he almost lost it last year to Windham who is a great rider but definately not at the top of his game. Get over it Chad you have nothing for the best.

  • Hoobatsench Says:

wait a minute… Alessi is a fast kid and getting alot faster at supercross, he will be a contender outdoors, RV as well, they are both great RV I think is a little better though. Alessi shouldnt just lay down his race or possibly a few races after that to get penalized for Reed. Race hard people and earn your fans. They are what are giving you your wonderful lives. Pastrana hasnt won a major championship ever(in supercross 450) and he is more popular than any of these guys. They dont get that the fans are what makes these guys and not all of them like this little kid whining that goes on. Race hard and keep it clean and let the best man win.

  • Mxracer28 Says:

Chad will put on a great show! I bet he will win the main. James on the other hand likes to push beyond all limits and I am sorry to say but Vegas is just to dry for that type of riding. This race will be live and very exciting to watch. Anything can and will happen.

  • Hoobatsench Says:

Oh yeah, big ups for Reed for not commenting about the Chisholm crap on here. Keep racing bud, people like someone that just gives it his all. Championship or no this year you are one bad dude. One of the toughest riders ever. Lets remember that about you, dont stoop to cheap tricks.

  • Tyler Says:

Chad Reed is like a pop tart! He’s soft in the middle

  • h0lesh0t Says:

James and Chad are both awesome riders. By the results though, James is better and more talented. What Kyle did was bullshit. We had a great race going on. For the spectacle and drama, I hope 800 takes James down without any injuries. It’d a be like a soap opera. Seriously though, James deserves the championship. No rider has ever one 10 or more mains and not won the championship. It looks to be in the bag for Stewart come Las Vegas.

  • AnonymousISdumb Says:

STFU. That’s all i NEED to say. Quit drinkin’ on your haterade.

  • Reed Sucks Says:

Can’t handle the Truth??? Neither can Reed. Thats why he’s crying for Mikey to take out Stewart. Chisholm made a bonehead move, but it didn’t take Reed out and only slightly slowed him down. Oh and lets not forget that if Reed hadn’t taken him out at A1, Stewart would already have it in the bag anyway.

  • Luke Says:

when will that gear he’s wearing come out for the public?

  • D-Walk311 Says:

hey “reed sucks”…reed did not take out stewart at A1 dumbass, james missed a shift and reed was in the same line and ended up hitting stewarts back tire…it wasn’t a take out bud…now go back to the beginner track you spode..

  • bonehead Says:

maybe alessi will be the tuffblock in the track like he was outdoors..headbutting the ground and being used as a sponge.

  • free338 Says:

i dont see u out there tryin to race lame ass if anyone would be a tuffblock on the track it would be you puss

  • dgizzy Says:

How come Jlaw never got a black flag? Just asking.

  • Erin Bates Says:

Guys chill out, maybe you guy’s should watch the replay a few times Kyle clearly was hard on the brakes as soon as his wheels hit the ground, so I believe him when he says his throttle stuck. So guys chill.

  • DMoto131 Says:

I’ve got to say.. at least for once, Chad was willing to go in there and push James a little wide. I’m not really a big fan of either of them, but I am truly tired of the “freeway” racing we have had for the last couple years.

Back in the day, Johnny ‘O, Rick Johnson, David Bailey, Bob Hannah and the crew would not settle for 2nd and if they needed to nudge the competition a little during the race, that’s what they did. These guys had some balls and would put ‘em on the line when they needed to. Ever hear an interview with Pastrana about racing.. that guy lives for the bar banging battles. Although Reed tends to whine and cry a bit and make excuses, it seems like ‘ol Ricky Carmichael is rubbin off on him a bit lately and he has been man’in up lately.

Part of the reason James is so fast coming through the pack most of the time is because he already knows riders will just get out of his way.. don’t get me wrong, the guy is blazing fast, but if your running in 7th and James is running 8th, you are racing AGAINST him. There is no reason to just move over or just give him room, push his sorry ass to the edge of the track like anyone else (he’d do it to them in a heartbeat to get by).

When Chad comes in on him and squeezes him into the tuffblox, it makes James start to think about his lines and maybe even second guess that nice easy outside line if he thinks somebody might come under him because HE left the door open. James has been using this same tactic for years, and riders know that when he is coming up on them they have to keep from leaving the door open, or he will do whatever he needs to in order to get by. It’s not dirty riding or anything like that, it’s just racing and James is very very good at it.

James is already ballsy and fast, Chad was just fast but now he is stepping into the ballsy territory. And.. I have to say, I respect him a little more than I did for digging deep and growing a pair.

  • d00d Says:

its funny how a factory bikes throttle can stick
and how erin bates and chad reed comment on forums BS fakee
lol seriously calm down about it
its for entertainment you dont need to get so worked up about it
they are paid to put on a show and there doing a good job
just watch the race and stop bitchinnnn

  • Anonymous Says:

when you are gettin lapped you dont try a take out move on the front runners no matter what that was a chickin shi* move and everyone knows it reed was matching his pace and would of beat him look how fast he came back after that it went from 9 seconds to 3.7 in 4 laps

  • Anonymous Says:

who cares anymore may the best man win they are both awsome riders but how about jake moss awsome ride until his mishap

  • JG Says:

maybe there will be a #800 racing??? That sounds like revenge… maybe #800 (riding over his head) into the side of js? Should be very interesting. Their team mates shouldn’t be allowed to race in vegas.

  • Karma4Chad Says:

Will the real Chad Reed please stand up! It’s great to see the old Reed again. Making excuses, running faster riders into the tuffblocks, jumping across the track. Plain old ridin dirty from good old #22. The worst of it is that you have the balls to complain about the same dirty stuff that you do. Chad, you are a second place rider, and your nice guy act didn’t fool me once this year. Your championships were given to you by the fact that the real contenders were not racing. You are a dirty rider who will do anything to win when you realize that you’ll have to settle for second best again. If your teammate happens to lose control and get into Stewart, as you eluded to on the podium, I will be there personally to clothesline you as you go by. See you in Vegas bitch!

  • Racing Fan Says:

As an Aussie enjoying the lifestyle in this great country of America, I find this fuss over whether Stewart is faster and whether Reed is a whiner, all pretty funny (amusing really). To say the least that Stewart is amazing (and before him the GOAT) is an understatement. For REED, coming from a country of 20 million people compared to the US of 300million, what are the odds of success?? He did not have a breeding ground to play in like Loretta’s and Ponca. I think you will find that he is just pumped to even be challenging someone of Stewart’s caliber. No-one can ride like JS and stay on the bike….partly the point isn’t it. I think credit is due for REED if for no other reason than his determination and persistence to be in the fight to win. If it were not for REED, then GOAT and JS would have had no competition for the last seven years. Who else in the field of riders can even come close to these guys every single week of the championship? I for one am bloody proud that REED even has the balls to make it a championship title fight and to challenge great champions like JS and GOAT… Go Reedy!!!

  • Hitler Says:

why do all u white people love js he’s black and don’t give a damn about you.. He is a thug that’s all he hangs around

  • T Says:

That’s pretty messed up dude. We are all one race under God. It doesn’t matter what nationality he is. The dude is the most talented motocross rider there’s been. Keep in mind Stewie is only 23.

  • T Says:

It doesn’t matter what happened before in the past. Even then he probably didn’t know about it. It’s not like they go back to the rig and discuss ways to take out Reed. Larry Brooks it’s even worried about it. If you read his interview two weeks ago he said Stewart is a better rider after managing both riders. He said in the end Stewart is going to beat him either way. I really doubt they would do something like that. I personally know Larry Brooks and know without a doubt they wouldn’t plan things like that. It’s racing, after what Reed has been saying to Stewart, Kyle (being Stewies friend) acted on his own.

  • M&M Says:

Reed is such a Pu*sy - admiting that he has to have another rider to take out Stewart so that he can win. If I were Alessi I would be ticked off for Reed even Implying that I was that type of rider. Also, I don’t know what your deffinition of a thug is, but Stewart is no where near that. Racist SOB - why would us “white people” like you?

  • Darrell K. Says:

I lost a lot of respect for Reed when he starts talking about racing dirty. Stewart had nothing to do with what happened and can beat Reed hands down anytime anywhere. Stewart passes clean, doesn’t talk crap and walks away with wins. Reed does the exact opposite. He rides dirty, makes threats after races, and talks like he will use himself and his team mates to take James out. I don’t have any respect for a guy like that, just a straight up poor loser.

  • 450rider Says:

    GO REED!

  • ridemx445 Says:

Hey Darrell. Do you watch all the races? Dont you recall Stewart making the first hard move on Reed all season? That is what the talk originates from. Down talking either of these riders makes people look like an idiot, without Reed or Stewart, the championship wouldnt be near the excitement. Reed has stepped up his game massively, and I dont hear him admitting his pain by choice. I say What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas! ;) 2009 FTW!

  • Anonymous Says:

stewart is faster than reed. if you ride or race you know that you have to do what u have to do. if i was reed i would take james out. if im 6 points down and james is out front in the final round i would take his front wheel out. they are both going for a championship. RC said the same thing when he was racing, if it comes down to it he will do what he has to do and RC was a clean racer but he said himself he would take someone out if it came down to it. well for reed it had came down to that point. so those of you that think reed is a dirty rider think again. bubba would do the same thing any racer that wanted to win would.

  • John Says:

Ok. Chisolm’s move was completely stupid, he is new to 450 and doesn’t know what he’s doing. He was trying to help Bubba, it was obvious. But did anyone notice that his attempt at blocking Reed was completely unsuccessful? I mean, yes, he did make contact with Reed, but Reed didn’t lose any momentum whatsoever. After that incident, Chad did what Chad always does, and pouted his way into second place. He completely let off the gas, when he had been hangin with Stewart the whole race. Yes, Chisolm is an idiot, But Chad gave up.

  • JPMODD Says:

FK” Reed there he is again talking about what other ppl are doing ask him why did he grab JS7 neck?Yeah what chills did was un called for if it was intentional!!But what Reed did was Delibrate!Go figure and yeah Reedy You right Karma is a MOFO!LOL..I like Reed as a rider but…..

  • OLD TIMER Says:

Simply stared I am a race fan. If I had to pick a rider I’m probably partial to the young up and comer RV. That said, all this back and forth about JS and CR is simply personal preference. Both of these guys are super riders trying to win a championship.

In the future maybe the scoring rules should to be revised. As the current standings proves to me maybe SX should take a page from F!. How can a championship be so close when the win column shows:
    11/3/1/1

The way I see it if you win all most three quarters of the races you should win. I am all for consistency but come on, 25 pts for the win and 22 pts for second. I thought the idea was supposed to be Race to WIN!!

  • CB Says:

who cares, alessi won’t be able to do anything because reed should have kept his mouth shut because now the ama and fim will have seen that and unless they’re stupid they will tell both team managers from suzuki and yamaha that if any of that happens there rider will lose points. face it the series is over james stewart is your 2009 ama supercross champ!

Some of you guy’s you need to think before you write. You have have no idea what it takes to get to where someone like Chad Reed is. “those that can do” and those that can’t don’t” or in this case sure do talk alot of trash. Try and remember the differance between an amature and a pro,the pro makes his living at it while an amature dosent. Anyone who workes as hard as these guys do (Chad and James)and all the rest of the PRO ! racers that show up and make it too the big show has the right to be very very pissed off when things go wrong *real or otherwise*. I for one dont mind hearing them say how they feel, they have earnd the right. If you race and your trying to make it to the big show I’m sure you can appreciate just what a badass! racer Chad Reed really is. All of these racers deserve respect for there complishments, but then again that might be a little to mature for forums like this. Thanks ! Chad, for making it exciting your one hell of a racer.

sure race to win, but race for the bigger win, like race to win the series. i I think the ama point systems works great, but i do like the way the GP’s ar structured with the least amount of points be awarded to the victor. 1st-1pt, 2nd-2pts…etc

  • motoman Says:

HA HA the yellow 800 is too slow to make the main, let alone screw with JS7.

  • Homeskillet Says:

Totally. 99% of the guys that post here sound like junior high kids. Nice Future!

  • Homeskillet Says:

P.S. Who said anything about 800 taking anybody out? You guys read way too much in to the racers comments. What a waste of energy.

  • steven Says:

Umm you need to check the replay there sweetheart.. he is clearly hard on the brakes to stay out of stewart’s bike and you can see his back tire break loose right before he its Reedy.. Its some BS and Stewart will get what he deserves.

  • Andimers Says:

Alessi deserves some more respect because he always shows up to the race with a lot of dedication and 100% goes for it. You would brick yourself if you stood on that start gate.

Also for the others, in an interview with him about supercross, he was asked what he would like to learn. He responded instantly “I’d like to learn how to race supercross.” It’s obvious he isn’t that good in supercross as in the nationals, but I don’t see why others should be digging him for it.

What’s CR gonna do if JS decides to just tuck in behind and ride out the entire race behind CR? This is really easy for JS, he doesn’t need to ever give CR a chance to take him out. He justs needs to make sure there isn’t anyone between the two of them as they come across the finish line. Championship Over! CR is in trouble!

I’d say Chad Reed is just reacting to what’s been done. That move by Chisholm was dirty and everyone who rides knows it. It was so obvious a third grader could see it. The FIM officials have done the right thing by kicking Chisholm’s sorry ass out of the Vegas final. He should also remember that his teammate this year might not be the same next year, and that it’s always better to make friends as opposed to enemies. Especially when you’re making an enemy of the reigning supercross champ.

When Reed says he will do anything to win, he means that he will fight fire with fire. Anybody can see that he rides clean, but push him too far and he’ll fight like a dog. I would too…

James Stewart is a fantastic rider, but all I have to say about Vegas is “Go Chad Reed”!! If Stewart is to win, then let him do it fair and square.

Have RC come back for this one race, throw Dungey on a 450 and let him get a ilttle payback on Bubba from the USA Open. Oh and I bet you Alessi has a huge bonus coming if there is a #7 TKO… Just a thought.

first of all if reed would have won why hasnt he been able to catch and pass stewart in the last 15 rounds. even the one where he beat stewart after stewart crashed twice he still barely won. yeah kyle made a bonehead move which he deserves the consequences but come on u all know reed is just using it cause hes frustrated that stewart is faster. Reed always has some reason when he does bad. its always a bike problem or hes sick. r.c would crash and most people would give up cause the bike was destroyed but hed race it how it was and still win. Reed is an amazing rider but hes always gonna be second best.

james started it? have you seen the way chad rides… whenever he passes he stands people up and bumps other riders. he said if thats the way they want to ride then game on. he has been asking for this fight the whole season.
