Podium Pie With Davi Millsaps

As the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross series winds down, Red Bull Honda Racing’s Davi Millsaps has picked it up with a total of four podium finishes so far this season. After taking over third early on in the main event in Salt Lake City, Millsaps held on to take home yet another podium. Once the podium celebration concluded, we caught up with him to find out his thoughts on the remainder of the season, his new gear deal, and his newest nickname.

Tell us about the race and how it went for you…

It was pretty fun for me. (Laughs) It was actually really good. I got a good start and rode with those two guys for a few laps at the start of the race. Their laps are a lot different than mine; their pace is faster than mine for 20 laps. I got a good cushion on the guys behind me and towards the end of the race I slowed down a bit to protect my podium position. It’s nice to be on the box for the second week in a row and for the fourth time this season. It hasn’t been the greatest season, but hey, it’s pretty good.

The last few races have gone better for you. What did you change?

I’ve just been trying to stay more positive lately. I mean, you might not love it out there, but you’ve got to at least like it. I’ve been trying a lot harder.

Talk about the heat race. You were right on Chad…

It was fun! I rode with Chad last year and it was fun. I got to race against him a lot last year and it felt just like that. When I fell I was pissed because I wanted to ride with him through the whole race. I got up and caught back up to him, but he wasn’t trying too hard after I crashed., so it wasn’t that hard to catch him. I gave him a little scare towards the end, but I didn’t have anything for him in the main.

Did you learn anything from James and Chad during the main?

I learn stuff from both of those guys. James is a wild man. He is absolutely wild in the main. It is cool to see what he does and the funky stuff he does. It works for him, but not from me. But I did learn from Chad in the heat race. You can learn from everyone, though. Hopefully, they can learn from me too where I am going better. Probably not though, since they are faster than me. (laughs)

What do you want to accomplish in Las Vegas?

Podium! Three podiums in a row would be a good way to end the season. I’d like to podium Vegas. I haven’t done so since 2005. In ’06 I crashed out, in ’07 I was knocked out for three minutes, and I crashed again in ’08.

Last question. Talk about your new duds…

My new deal with One Industries is really cool. Last weekend I was No Fear and now here I am. It’s different and no one was expecting it. The gear is all really cool and Jeremy and Danny are really pumped to have me. At least I hope they are!

Your butt patch says “Big Bear.” What does that mean?

(Laughs) Well, I shave in the morning and I have a beard by the end of the day. And then I shave my legs and they are hairy again by the time I finish shaving them. So I am a hairy guy, so they call me big bear. Oh, and I like to cuddle a lot with Britney, so they call be a teddy bear, too. (Laughs)

What? No question about why Davi went to ONE from No Fear?

  • Anonymous Says:

Millsaps is a moron. I cant believe he shaves his legs! he probally thinks it will make him faster. Hes always thankin or talkin about his fiance. It must be his first piece of ass!

  • crazymx Says:

Looks like there was a question about that—in some form or another. Davi just decided to give the standard answer about how pumped he is to be in the new gear. Usually those guys can’t and won’t talk about why they changed sponsors.

  • tygerwayne Says:

Hahaha maybe, but you would be pretty thankful too for that particular piece of ass.

  • Jason Says:

    Thats the truth…

  • tygerwayne Says:

Can I just say, Usain Bolt proved that ridiculous things like shaving your legs don’t make you faster. He set the world record for the 100m in short and a loose fitting jersey, forever proving that there is no need to expose to the world the awkwardness of a singlet.
Besides that, what’s more awkard than meeting a guy that shaves his legs?

  • Anonymous Says:

ahhh he doesnt do it because its faster….he wears pants, its no going to do it to ride a motocross bike father.

im sure he has his reasons, who cares!

  • MC915 Says:

Many of you have commented on Davi’s “leg shaving”.
You all may not realize that many of the top guys
do. Its much more comfortable when wearing knee
braces and if they need stitches its a cleaner wound.

  • Anonymous Says:

keeps you cooler during the summer for motocross, though i really can’t see the point of doing it during supercross…habit i guess?

  • Anonymous Says:

lots of racers shave there legs cuz the knee braces iratate your legs when theres hair and it gets ripped out so its just less painful

  • onefishstick Says:

Footpeg a little low on the passenger side?

  • Anonymous Says:

nah, gotta ride on the balls of yr feet. especially in the whoops. as you can see with davi it added probably 3 inches of suspension…

  • Jamaica MX Says:

my leg hair keeps the mosquitoes out

  • James Says:

Is Davi saying that he doesn’t enjoy the sport. He sounds like he hasn’t even been trying the entire season??? not sure whats up with those comments. definitely weird!
