For the first time in American major motocross publication history, a female rider has been featured in action on the cover: 2008 WMA Women’s Motocross Champion, Ashley Fiolek.
The distinction of first female cover was given to Ashley with good reason. The 17-year old rode her way to the top of the only professional women’s motorsport series in the U.S. this season and defeated five-time champion, Jessica Patterson in the process. Her seemingly effortless sweep through the other WMA National competitors was not even hindered by her mid-season broken wrist or by the fact that this was her first pro season.
Fiolek’s skill and tenacity made her a sweetheart among the motocross community long before her rise to the top of the women’s field. Her unique perspective as a deaf rider has also made her a star in mainstream and action sports media alike. In addition to her WMA win, Ashley also added contributor to her list of 2008 accomplishments by penning a monthly column called “Silence” in TransWorld Motocross Magazine.
“Though their numbers are few, women’s racing is an important part of our sport,” said Transworld Motocross’ Editor-in-Chief Donn Maeda. “Amazing not only because she’s deaf, but also for her talent on a bike, Ashley Fiolek will help take women’s motocross to the next level. I am proud to have her on our cover.”
