’05 Motocross Gear Buyer’s Guide

There are good times and bad times as the Editor of TransWorld Motocross. When it comes to crunching numbers and trying to stick to an editorial budget, I could think of a hundred things I’d rather attempt. However, when a bottom-line dollar figure is sitting there smack-dab in front of my face in black and white, some decisions are easy to make. In this particular instance, I could have either hired a bunch of chi chi models to help out with the 2005 gear buyer’s guide or bought a plane ticket to Millville, Minnesota, to witness Mike Alessi’s pro debut. Now I don’t know about you, but with all the pre-race smack laid down by my friends the Alessis, my decision was crystal clear. (You’ll find that feature on page 98…)

With a high-dollar plane ticket, a rental car bill and a hotel tab to cover, that left about 10 bucks for the gear buyer’s guide modeling talent. What’s a guy to do, you ask? Well, at times like this, it’s good to be the Editor. Here at TransWorld Motocross, we pride ourselves on the fact that our magazine is truly a labor of love, as almost everyone on our staff rides moto. That said; I recruited all of the throttle twisters on staff to lend a hand and enjoy a day of walking in Derek Zoolander’s shoes. While some were eager (mostly the girls), others were not so anxious to take part in my silly concept. Again, it’s times like this that it is nice to be the Editor…

Photo Editor/Associate Editor Garth Milan is the man responsible for bringing all of those breathtaking shots to the pages of TransWorld Motocross. A formally trained photojournalist, Big Girth is also a former male model. Hmmm… Is that Blue Steel or Magnum that he is throwing at my lens? It’s hard to say. When I tried to get my boy G to clown for the camera like everyone else, he refused, stating that even though he has retired from his stint as a professional piece of man meat, the art of modeling was still a craft that must be treated with respect. Sheesh!

I have known my Associate Editor Ryan Cooley for years, but I can count the number of times I’ve actually called him Ryan on one hand. Why’s that, you ask? The first time I met him, I decided that I would call him George because he reminded me of that curious little monkey who belongs to the man with the yellow hat. George really hauls butt on a motocross bike, mostly because he lived in Bishop for several years and spent his free time riding on the brutally rough Mammoth MX track. As fast as he is, however, he’s got an uncanny knack for collecting injuries like they were rare Pokemon cards, and I think he’s been hurt and out of commission about half the time he’s worked with us. That’s okay, though, because that gives him more time to write those poetic, sensitive features of his!

There are way too many ways to poke fun at our Editor-at-Large Steve Cox, but the guy does such a great job as our in-the-field reporter that I’ve decided to take it easy on him. “Prefers,” as we like to call him, actually hauls butt (and a lot of it) on a motocross bike when he finds the time to take a day off at the track. Why is Cox so busy, you ask? In addition to providing content to your favorite motocross magazine, he also submits photos and stories to about 10 other moto magazines around the globe. Though it may not look like it in this photo because of the untucked jersey, Prefers prefers racing over freestyle. When I shot this photo, Steve couldn’t even begin to think about zipping up the size 34 pants we asked him to model, so the untucked jersey is, in fact, (thankfully) hiding his surname!

Since Web Master Steve “GuyB” Gibeon has joined our team, traffic on www.transworldmx.com has gone through the roof! A former BMX magazine editor, we’ve forgiven GuyB for his pedal pixie roots because of all the pain and suffering he’s endured at the controls of a motocross bike. In his most recent off-bike excursion, GuyB snapped the top of his tibia off and spent the better part of last season in a gnarly cast/brace combo. Though he now walks like a gangsta rapper, the threat of more pain and suffering were not enough to keep Steve off a motocross bike and he joins us on weekend excursions on a regular basis. Now, if we could only get him to turn that AOL Instant Messenger off during the week…

Wanna buy a T-shirt? Pat Hodgins is our Retail Customer Sales Rep. What does that mean? To borrow another editor’s oft-used clichà‡, let’s just call him the TransWorld Motocross foot soldier. Pat pounds the pavement and is responsible for getting TWMX magazines and merchandise in dealerships and other retail outlets, and in his free time he blasts berms on his Honda CRF450R. MelonFan123 (his internet bandit screen name) used to ride with a borrowed cue ball helmet because he cracked his in half and he was too shy to ask me for a new one. These days, let’s just say that he’s the best-dressed Retail Customer Sales Rep in the business!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, this is my wife, Eileen Maeda. Though she’s not an official member of the TransWorld Motocross staff, she’s been the boss of me for the past 11 years and is largely responsible for the position I am in now. Eileen rides quite well and has a couple motocross races under her belt, but since we’ve had our daughters her riding time has tapered off. She’s landed some paying riding gigs, appearing in a Yamaha television commercial and on a Kawasaki dual-sport brochure, so I guess that makes her more of a professional rider than I am!

When we first hired our art director Luis Rodriguez away from Nike, we all thought he might be one of those kooky art weenies. It turned out, however, that L-Rod is one of the coolest, most laid-back guys we know. Before he joined our team Luis had only ridden ancient British street bikes because he loves to push his vehicles home, but in the years since he has become quite the avid motocrosser. Possessing a riding style reminiscent of Ponch and Jon on CHiPs, Luis actually came to me once and declared that there was something wrong with his YZ125. “There’s this black crap leaking out of the end of the silencer,” he said. “It must be broken!”

Michael Young and I have been testing bikes together since he first got off minis. In fact, when I first met him he handed me a business card that read, “Michael Young #44. 125cc Intermediate.” How cheesy is that? Over the years, “Nutz” and I have become good friends and have plenty of great memories, like the time I landed him a factory Suzuki ride for the Minneapolis Supercross and he snapped his wrist in half, or the time I got him a factory Honda at Steel City and he turned his hands into pure hamburger. Over the years Michael has tested more factory bikes than most factory riders, and he can whip a bike flat with the best of them. Man, how I wish I had saved that

business card…

Have you ever seen that lame television show called “The OC?” If you have, you’ll understand when I say that Associate Publisher Marc Fiore epitomizes everything that is Orange County. Garth and I suspect that manicures, facials, and weekly massages are all a part of Faropey’s weekly routine, even though he denies being metrosexual until he’s blue in the face. Fiore suffers from some serious commitment issues and our staff’s smooth operator slides in and out of relationships with the ladies with more grace than RC in a Southwick berm. On the track, however, Fiore’s style is not nearly as slick. Uncontrollable swaps, off-track excursions, and violent headshake are all a regular part of his moto game. Heck, maybe it’s karma…

Our Senior Test Rider is Rich Taylor, a guy who needs no introduction. One of the most respected test riders in the motocross industry, RT has also enjoyed considerable racing success and has held national numbers as low as 30. When I am holding a camera and Rich is riding a test bike, we have an unreal chemistry together-I know exactly what he is going to do, and he knows exactly what I am looking for in a photo. In fact, we got the CRF250R photo in this issue done in only three frames! These days RT is doing plenty of stunt riding for Hollywood, and he’s also a single guy who likes long walks on beaches, listening to a girl talk about her day, and all-day shopping excursions at the mall. Bet you didn’t know that we had moto-royalty on our staff, did you? Test rider Mitchell Bailey and his wife, advertising sales rep Melissa Bailey, are part of that Bailey clan. He may not be as fast as his big brother David was, but Mitchell still enjoyed the tutelage of his dad-Professor Gary Bailey-and he possesses that same effortless Bailey riding style. Interesting Mitchell Bailey factoid: MB likes to sit on his bike-in the garage-while he plays MX Unleashed on his PlayStation2. We recently learned that the happy couple is expecting their first child, which means that there will be no play riding in Melissa’s near future and definitely less bike-mounted Playstation2 for Mitchell. By the way, does anyone out there have a hot tip on some low-rider Diesel maternity jeans? If you do, drop Melissa a line at melissav@twsnet.com, Attn: Just Say No to Overalls!

When he isn’t contesting the Canadian Nationals for team Morgan Suzuki or helping set up the works Kawasakis for Bubba and Byrner, Craig Decker (left) will lend us a hand here and there with some bike testing. In addition to being incredibly fast on a motocross bike, the former factory rider is also a golf pro. Can you believe that? Some guys are just good at everything they do. Well, except modeling, maybe… Decker introduced us to another one of our mainstay test riders, Josh “The Hatchet” Stice. In case you’ve missed it before, we call him “The Hatchet” because he’s really, really hard on bikes. So hard, that when he’s done riding one it looks like it has been beaten repeatedly with a hatchet. Advertising Coordinator Valerie Rivera and Production Supervisor Taryn Kent are both alumni of the Op Girls Learn to Ride program, hosted by Honda. During the week, Val is responsible for figuring out the order in which our editorial pages blend with all of those ads. It’s a tough, frustrating job that is not so different from struggling with a Rubik’s cube, so it’s no wonder that she blows off steam by shopping for $200 jeans and “adorable” Hello Kitty accessories on the weekends. Taryn, meanwhile, works in our main office in Oceanside-some 50 miles away from our satellite office in Tustin-and wears a ton of hats as she keeps the work flowing on the production side of things. Have you ever heard of a male receptionist? Neither have we. When the hot chick that ran the front desk got canned, we were all shocked when the boss hired Maicol Chavez to be the voice on the other end of the main TransWorld phone line. Erich and Erika Schlitz are our brother and sister team, and as evidenced by this photo, they still share that sibling rivalry, even at work. I find it odd that their names differ by only a single syllable, but then again, look at Heath and Heather Voss; I guess it makes it easier for all the aunts and uncles to remember their names at Thanksgiving dinner. Erich’s title in the masthead is Prepress Specialist, which basically means he spends way too much time staring at the computer screen when it comes time to Photoshop the model’s side of the poster. Erich tells me that he is the Air King on his Honda CRF450R, but I’ve never actually seen him in action. Ericha, meanwhile, is the OG dirt girl on staff and rides a CRF250R almost every single weekend of the year. She’s not technically on our staff, as she is the ad coordinator for TransWorld Surf and TransWorld Snowboarding, but we all know where her heart is. Hmmm… I wonder which of the Schlitz clan is faster?
