The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship has set up shop in Mechanicsville, Maryland, for round seven of the 2014 series at Budds Creek MX.  This round is a favorite of many on the series, thanks to the soft soil and sprawling, fast layout that weaves between two hillsides. It’s obvious we are on the East Coast in July today, as the temperatures are ranging in the high 80s and humidity weighs ominously in the air.

450 Timed Qualifying

After spending the last weeks clouded in controversy and poor finishes, James Stewart’s bad spell seemed to break in the first practice session of the day. The Yoshimura Suzuki rider notched the fastest lap of the morning, a 1:57.748, besting the next rider by a half second. Ken Roczen charged through the second session and put in a 1:58.217 lap, but a rock became lodged in his brake midway through and forced the Red Bull KTM rider to the work area. Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey claimed third on the charts, with a 1:58.604, besting Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard by a small amount of time to take the position. After three weeks, it comes as no surprise to see GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac in the top five, a spot he earned with a 1:59.375 time.

250 Timed Qualifying

As usual, Christophe Pourcel waited until the very last lap of the final 250 A practice session to put his Valli Motorsports Yamaha through its paces. The Frenchman’s line selection and speed allowed him to turn a 1:59.331 lap, nearly a full second ahead of anyone in the field. Rockstar Energy Racing KTM’s Jason Anderson was fast throughout the morning and posted a 2:00.105, but was bumped down the order by his competitor’s late-session sprint. Many expect Jeremy Martin to thrive in the soft terrain of Budds Creek, and a 2:00.225 put the Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha rider third on the list. Marvin Musquin recently took a training trip to Florida, and it seems the sand of the Sunshine State has helped the Red Bull KTM rider for the weekend. He was fourth overall with a 2:00.498 lap time. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett has found success at Budds Creek in the past, and he logged the fifth fastest time of the day with a 2:00.529.
