2014 Motocross Buyer’s Guide: Helmets

Let’s be real: safe sports don’t require helmets, and protecting your head should be your number-one priority each and every time that you throw a leg over your motorcycle. Sure, motocross is fashion-fickle and we’re all guilty of wanting an aftermarket exhaust that we might really not need, or a fresh set of graphics that will do nothing to help cut our lap times, but when it comes to choosing a helmet putting function over fashion is definitely a must. Thankfully, almost every helmet offered these days looks great due to huge advancements in graphic technology, so making a decision based on the level of protection it offers is a much easier proposition. Believe us when we say that your helmet is no place to skimp when it comes time to hit the checkout line. We’re not necessarily implying that the more expensive the helmet, the better the protection; but seriously…
One distinguishing factor between all of the 2014 helmet offerings featured are the certifications that they carry. While every helmet sold in the United States must carry the DOT certification, the two different ratings that you will find in the helmets in the pages that follow are Snell, the long-standing US certification, and ECE, the top-level certification throughout Europe. We’re not here to argue the merits and shortcomings of each rating—that would require more pages than this guide alone—but know that both Snell and ECE certifications are approved for competition at the highest levels in our sport, both in the United States and abroad.
For comparison’s sake we’ve included weights, as measured on a size medium on our TWMX scales. Furthermore, helmets designated with an asterisk indicate that they have been crash tested and endorsed by the TransWorld Motocross staff.
