AMA To Start Awarding Points For Practice?

The AMA is rumored to be implementing a new points system based on practice times, to finally properly reward riders for “winning” practice. Awarding practice points also has the added benefits of increasing fan participation during the afternoon practice sessions, as well as providing new wagering possibilities for off-shore betting.

“This also opens up the possibility of another award to be handed out on the podium,” said an AMA official, on condition of anonimity. “It also has the added benefit of being an award that people won’t sound so glum about winning,” he added. “As you know, people have been trying to win practice for years. Also, there are riders who are blazing fast in practice, but who struggle to put it together during the night show. This is an additional way to showcase the fastest practicers in the sport.”

Another possible reason for change is an additional TV show featuring practice and qualifying. “Obviously NASCAR fans have proven ravenous in their appetite for more and more content. We expect that SX and MX fans will be equally enthusiastic.”

TWMX Editor-At-Large, Steve Cox will be in Dallas this weekend, and will provide updated practice reports throughout the event.

Below you’ll find a chart showing the practice points earned from Anaheim 1, through two weeks ago in Orlando.
